CurrentThe transformation of water, society and technology relations is at the core of my work. I am particularly interested in (counter) design processes and the role of societal actors in technological change. Increasingly my work focusses on climate adaptation and rural-urban connections in relation to water.My interest in conducting research is not purely academic, but takes shape at the meeting-place between research and practice in order to affect observable impact in real life. Post-Doctoral Fellow
Based in Chimoio, Mozambique. Setting-up of a country office and managing the social science aspects of two projects. The first project runs in 15 communities of Central Mozambique and aims at improving farm productivity in vulnerable smallholder production systems. The second project is part of the Sub-Saharan Africa Challenge Program and operates in Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique. The project aims at improving innovation capacities at district level, linking farmers to input and output markets and the participatory adaptation of soil fertility management technologies.

PhD field research on water allocation and distribution processes in the Khorezm irrigation and drainage system. Part of the ZEF/UNESCO project “Economic and Ecological restructuring of land and water use in Khorezm, Uzbekistan”.The PhD was awarded the qualification 'magna cum laude'.
Independent Researcher
In collaboration with the University of Pretoria and the Water Research Commission I conducted two research projects. (1) The documentation of an innovative approach of an Irrigation Management Transfer (IMT) programme being implemented at 114 smallholder irrigation systems; and (2) a detailed case study on water governance in a farmer managed irrigation system, two years after IMT.
