Efflux Biosystems was a contract research organization (CRO) providing preclinical animal model evaluation, drug discovery, and consulting services for male and female urology, sexual health, gastrointestinal, and smooth muscle research. I performed many activities necessary in a startup including business development, budgeting, accounts, marketing, identifying, and representing customers. We closed the business successfully without any incidents due to lack of demand and changed market.

I led the urology research team conducting research to understand and develop pharmacotherapy for Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI), Underactive Bladder (UAB), and premature ejaculation (PE). I managed 10+ scientists and a $5.5 million yearly budget. I was instrumental in advancing 18 programs through 55 preclinical developmental stages for 3 indications. I successfully managed the closure of Urogenix operations as part of a reorganization by the parent company Astellas in 2012 and helped employees cope with change and transition to alternative opportunities.

I managed and led the transition of information technology (IT) and research operations from Dynogen to Urogenix after acquisition by Astellas providing seamless research operations. I developed, characterized, and validated chronic in vivo animal models of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) for exploratory research and testing compounds to find drug candidates.

Dynogen was a venture funded company re-purposing existing marketed neuroscience drugs to treat urinary incontinence resulting from overactive bladder. I was hired to develop novel and chronic animal models by using engineering, software, and pharmacology knowledge and skills. I developed state of the art laboratory for continuous 24/7 urodynamic monitoring in unrestrained awake animals using radio telemetry (using DSI and Notocord) methods which produced better quality data and a reduction in animal usage. I lead the in vivo model development group and established multiple chronic animal models for overactive bladder and urinary incontinence. We identified and qualified several compounds by testing in the chronic incontinence models. Two candidates entered into a clinical trial for three indications and the company decided to close the pre-clinical research operations. As a result, our research group started a contract research organization, Urognix, Inc., in 2006 and was acquired by Astellas.

I was hired to lead the Urology group in discovering novel drug targets for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and Urinary Incontinence (UI) and manage major pharma collaboration. I collaborated with multiple scientific groups in a matrix environment to advance drug targets from identification to assay development, to High Throughput Screening (HTS). I managed 3-5 research associates working on expression profiling, ISH/IHC, in vivo models, and bioinformatics analysis. In a short period of fewer than 2 years, our research resulted in generating 5 patent filings. After the re-organization of the company, I successfully oversaw the closure of Urology research operations.
