Venkat Kalkunte has been in the data communications arena since 1988,starting with work for Digital Equipment Corporation on semiconductor engineering, high performance enterprise networking technologies such as FDDI and ATM. After successfully completing graduate work in engineering and computer sciences from University of Massachusetts, he has been in engineering and senior management positions in a career spanning 36 years. He Has created 5 startups in the Silicon Valley, holds over 65 US patents, with several more pending. In the mid-90s he had developed ATM, FDDI high performance networking equipment for Digital Equipment Corporation, Trillium (Intel), Cisco, as architect and principal engineer responsible for hardware designs, device drivers and signaling protocol stack. In the 1990s, he founded industry’s first carrier grade Voice over IP telecom switching startup Transmedia Communications, which was sold to Cisco in 1998. In the early 2000s he continued for 6.5 years to system architect Cisco's carrier multi-service access products and Cisco call manager, an enterprise PBX. In the mid-2000s, he developed 802.11 WLAN solutions for enterprise applications, by serving as architect in Aruba Networks(HP). This expertise led to creation of startup that delivered the first fixed wireless access ISP service for Vivint. Since mid-2010s he has been focused on LTE, and millimeter wave equipment design. Majority of his patents developed have been in LTE, 60Ghz, 28Ghz, 39Ghz. Recent focus has been applying knowledge in semiconductor engineering, system design, and protocol stacks to develop unique solutions for Orbic where he serves as Chief Technology Officer, responsible for overseeing products that range from smart phones, feature phones, mobile hotspots, CPEs, wearables, tablets. Specialties: I have done significant architecture, design, and development of products for routing, quality of service, and Voice over IP, and wireless with excursions into associated problems of security, provisioning, and instrumentation.
