I've always been fascinated by multidisciplinary issues in which technical and less technical aspects come together. Therefore this was a clearly present factor in my choices of university programmes. In the bachelor phase, this was the technical bachelor Advanced Technology, in which physics, chemistry and mathematics obviously play an important role, but in which I learned a lot about the embedding of technology in the society and what it takes to make innovative products a success, as well.During my masters Nanotechnology I have specialized myself in the field of nanotechnology, which is a broad scientific field in which research is performed from many different specializations at the smallest scale possible to develop new techniques, insights and products.Now, during my time as a Ph.D. student at the University of Twente, all the multidisciplinary knowledge proves to be very useful in my research on ultrasharp tips for atomic force microscopy (AFM). In this research, which focuses on the development of methods to fabricate ultrasharp tips, physics, chemistry and material science all come together to develop and perform the fabrication of the devices.Next to that, I always consider how I can explain the work that I do in the best possible way to a layman, what is the relevance of it, and how it will eventually contribute to the society, without ending up in long technical explanations.
