About Vern Ludden
Dr. Vern Ludden is focused on helping leaders improve how they think and perform by becoming wiser. Throughout the past ten years he has been engaged in a research agenda to study wisdom and leadership. The research included developing a model of wisdom for leaders based on literature in the fields of leadership, psychology, biblical studies, and philosophy. With the help of several doctoral students, he tested the validity of the Wisdom-Based Leadership Model (WBLM) and researched various aspects of leadership and wisdom. Vern created an assessment tool, the Wisdom-Based Leadership Instrument (WBLI), to measure the propensity of leaders to apply wisdom in their leadership. Research has demonstrated the reliability and validity of the instrument. Information about the WBLI was presented at the 15th Annual Global Conference of the International Leadership Association in Montreal on November 1, 2013 and was positively received by the 55 scholars and practitioners in the audience. Vern has used the WBLI with several groups of leaders and can help leaders in your organization. Several dissertation advisees Dr. Ludden chairs have been working on research studies related to wisdom. One advisee, Dr. Scott Livingston, established the validity of the wisdom-based leadership model. His dissertation determined executive coaches perceive the model to be a valid concept for wisdom and confirmed the role of an executive coach encompasses the development of wisdom in leaders. Other advisees have researched the role of foolishness in causing leaders to make fallacious decisions, explored how leaders perceive intuition and apply intuition in their leadership, and examined how leaders use reflection to improve their actions and results. An important part of wisdom is the leader’s ability to understand how their worldview and impacts their life and work. Vern is now developing tools that will assist leaders in identifying, understanding, and developing their worldview.
