I, Vernon Baker, founded HSeverywhere in April 2000 as the incubator for what parents and volunteers were referring to as the HSe web application. If launched, it would stand to help students break the cycle of tragic K-12 results in the U.S. For decades the National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as the nation’s report card, had revealed the relentless catastrophe that an impossibly high percentage of all U.S. high school students upon graduation were unable to read or do math at proficiency; hence, a gateway to the nation’s socioeconomic bottom and poverty An interesting side story but not the focus here: Over 40 years ago I devised a quick way to teach two-year-olds how to read, which I tongue-in-cheek described as rewiring the brain. Then, 20 years later, validation! A noted researcher at Stanford Medical School duplicated my effort. He even called it “rewiring the brain.” I used baby humans; he used baby owls. He waited a relatively short period until the owls reached adulthood. My wait was 20 years, but our results were the same—and startling. Innovation. Remaking NAEP results will not be solved by assigning a particular field of study or credential to fix it. Meaning well, Congress visited the No Child Left Behind Act on the nation. For over a decade, NCLB massively disrupted K-12 learning. A full cycle of pre-K-12 young people were lost in the shuffle. In keeping with the norm in the U.S., huge numbers of young people were left at extreme disadvantage.Upon seeing the details of the NCLB Act (before it was launched), parents and volunteers, and on one occasion myself, visited the office of the U.S. Secretary of Education to lay out the case that NCLB might cost $trillions, whereas the HSe web app would cost a pittance. Parents explained that NCLB would disrupt teachers, whereas the HSe web app would be fully independent, would not interfere, and would stand to power NAEP results to mounting, escalating proficiency levels. A prescient HSe web app minority volunteer at the meeting quietly asked if the Department of Education could replace NCLB with the HSe web app. My passion is the belief that every child is needed and that our job as adults is to ramp up the K-12 advantage in the U.S. The irony is that our nation’s pre-K-12 education system itself, together with its teachers, is arguably the best in the world.
