Phd Student: "Seismic Processing Of Microseismicity And Tremor Signals".
The project is financed by SIG (Services Industriels de Genève) and is part of the program “Geothermie 2020” whose goal is to exploit geothermal energy in the canton of Geneva. The aim is to understand the local seismicity in the Greater Geneva Basin before geothermal exploitation starts and follow if and how it changes throughout the Geothermal project so I deployed a temporary network composed of 20 broadband seismic stations in the area. The main activities performed include the densification and maintenance of seismic networks and seismic analysis of the continuous data sets for a better understanding of the micro-seismic activity in the area. This includes detection, identification and location of seismic events and magnitude determination. The aim is to build local seismic catalogues, improve the local velocity models for precise earthquake locations and focal mechanisms determination. Most part of the automation process was done with Python or Bash scripting.I look at the type of signals that are small, weak and hard to be analyzed due to low signal-to-noise ratio, the type of signals which the normal routines for earthquakes detections can't detect. Particularly, if the arrival phases have an emergent onset, are "hidden" in the noise and only present in two or three stations. I developed a Python tool that locates signals using the envelope of the cross-correlation between stations pairs to give a relative location in a sliding time window, using a grid-search approach. When combining all plots it is possible to produce a film showing the evolution of the system through time. This tool was used to locate drumbeat signals generated by the Nirano Mud Volcano, Italy. I additionally identify, characterize the signals generated by this active system.
