I have been a Special Education Paraeducator in the San Carlos School District for the last nine years. My main responsibility has been working directly with students in Kindergarten through fourth grade. This includes supporting students in class as well as working with small groups in the Learning Center to teach reading, writing, spelling, and math. I’ve also had the opportunity to assist our Resource Specialist in a variety of tasks related to building and maintaining our RSP program. Additionally, I have received training in preparing and editing Individual Education Plans (IEPs). I have found that I really enjoy the clerical aspects I have taken on. I am reminded of how satisfying it was to prepare reports, write and proofread documents and coordinate with other departments and subcontractors in my previous career as a corporate meeting planner. I had planned to return to a more formal full-time position once my children were in high school. Now that they are, this is the optimal time for me to pursue this opportunity. I have enjoyed being an elementary school paraeducator in addition to a pre-school and middle school paraeducator during most of the last nine summers. Yet, the more I assist with the ‘behind the scenes’ of our program the more I feel ready to move on from the classroom.I am excited to advance my career. I am interested to continue in the field of education in a role that will pair my desire to increase my involvement on the administrative side and work full time. I am also eager to explore new areas where my administrative and meeting planning experience would enhance and improve the environment.
