Profile bio

About Veronica Doerr

I sharpen the effectiveness of sustainable development in a world impacted by climate change. With 20 years' experience bridging climate-related research with policy and action (10+ in organisational leadership), I help people translate their ambition into tactical, incisive, often novel actions. The end result is more impactful, systemic climate-resilient development – in rural and regional Australia as well as across the Majority World.‘Integrating climate change’ is a deceptively simple concept that grows more complex the more you know about it, with rapidly changing physical conditions, policy and international cooperation settings, and complex and cascading impacts. To help the people I work with navigate this with rigour and clarity, I apply participatory and interdisciplinary research-based approaches to analyse systems and intervention options, design policies and programs, and support learning and adjustment through evaluation. I bring to the table systems thinking, brokering and facilitation skills, and deep technical knowledge of climate projections, foresighting, decision-making under uncertainty, adaptation pathways, adaptive learning, resilience science, the UN architecture around climate change, and changing market and finance opportunities. My goal is always to provide confidence to decision-makers, working through the ‘messy middle’ of this global socio-cultural-institutional-technical challenge to find the most effective levers they can pull which create benefits now while proactively meeting the future. I get particularly energised working in the land sector, especially in low and middle-income countries. In addition to working in agriculture, rural enterprise and nature conservation, I have also led teams working in disaster risk reduction, infrastructure resilience, climate risk in government as well as finance and insurance, Indigenous enterprise development, urban transformation, circular economy, and socially responsible innovation. Finally, I believe that ambitious action on climate must be underpinned by large-scale, generous, supportive collaboration on a scale the world has not seen before - for coordinated actions, policies, and finance. So I ‘lean in’ as much as I can – finding creative ways to support large-scale collaboration initiatives like the Adaptation Research Alliance and using platforms like LinkedIn to celebrate and share the work of others so we can all learn and progress as fast as possible, together.
