Verónica Durán, Phd Email and Phone Number
I am a highly analytical and multifaceted scientist with well developed communication and interpersonal skills. Strong background in human immunology and infectious diseases. I thrive in synergistic, interdisciplinary and culturally diverse team environments.I am currently working as a collaborative postdoctoral fellow between the Stanford University and the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub. The focus of my research is on single-cell characterization of dengue virus infection in patient-derived samples via a multi-omics approach, complemented by functional immunological assays. Given my experience with airborne pathogens and BSL-3 laboratories, I am also involved in the design and execution of antiviral research projects related to SARS-CoV-2.I obtained my PhD in Immunology and Microbiology at the Hannover Medical School, Germany, where I studied innovative drug delivery systems targeting human primary immune cells for the treatment of Tuberculosis, or as vaccine vehicles. I have a M.Sc in Molecular Bioengineering from the Technical University Dresden, Germany and a B.Sc in Microbiology from the University of The Andes in Bogotá, Colombia.

Postdoctoral ResearcherStanford University School Of Medicine Sep 2021 - PresentCalifornia, United States- Single-cell multi-omics (scRNA-seq, CITEseq) analysis of patient-derived whole blood and PBMC samples to identify early immune signatures predictive of clinical outcomes during Dengue virus infection.- Design, planning, and execution of functional immunological assays (antigen presentation, T cell activation, myeloid effector functions) to validate findings and develop biologically relevant models describing dengue immune response mechanisms -
Postdoctoral ResearcherTwincore Gmbh Jun 2020 - Aug 2021Hannover, Lower Saxony, GermanyMy project aimed at understanding the cellular basis by which type-I interferon (IFN-I) immunity underlies disease severity during SARS-CoV-2 infection. We generated hiPSC-cardiomyocytes and macrophages from IFNAR1 competent and IFNAR1 deficient individuals, and demonstrated how IFN-I responses constrain SARS-CoV-2 infection and promote cytokine production, thus exhibiting divergent causal effects in the development of critical COVID-19 pneumonia.Being the most experienced BSL-3 user when the COVID-19 pandemic started, I established the initial protocols for SARS-CoV-2 work and was in charge of training more than 10 scientists for this purpose. -
Doctoral ResearcherHelmholtz Centre For Infection Research Jan 2015 - Jun 2020Hannover Area, GermanyDuring my PhD thesis, I studied innovative drug delivery formulations that target human immune cells. I particularly focused on carbohydrate-functionalized nanocarriers for the selective targeting of antigen presenting cells (APC). These nanocarriers hold promise as novel formulations to either modulate APC function and immune responses or to inhibit pathogens that preferentially infect APC, such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis.- Liaison between international and multidisciplinary teams involving academics and industry partners such as the Hannover Medical School, Rodos BioTarget GmbH biopharmaceutical company, Helmholtz Centre for Pharmaceutical Research (HIPS) and Fraunhoffer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine. -
Masters StudentMpi-Cbg - Max Planck Institute Of Molecular Cell Biology And Genetics Mar 2013 - Mar 2014Dresden Area, GermanyI worked as a research assistant in a project focused on the force-generating machinery maintaining the spindle at the cell center during mitosis- Studying the centering mechanism of the mitotic spindle in C.elegans embryo and themotor proteins involved in the process.- Use of magnetic tweezers to study the force-generating machinery that keeps the spindleat the cell center.- Gene silencing using RNAi to create deletion mutants of C.elegans. -
Research AssistantNasa - National Aeronautics And Space Administration Oct 2011 - Aug 2012Bogotá, ColombiaPerform motivation workshops towards science and astrobiology in scientific educational centers in Colombia. Preliminary research plan for the assignment of extreme geographical environments in Colombia, as well as for the molecular characterization of the microorganisms involved in such environments. -
Geobiology Summer CourseUniversity Of Southern California. Wrigley Institute Jun 2012 - Jul 2012“GeoBiology 2012, co-sponsored by the NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI), is an intensive course exploring the coevolution of the Earth and its biosphere, with an emphasis on how microbial processes affect the environment and leave imprints on the rock record. Participants get hands-on experience in research methods in geobiology and work in research groups solving current questions relevant to the field”. -
