Teaching a multidisciplinary masters level foundational course covering current qualitative social research methods, practice in the use of techniques, consideration of the philosophy of qualitative methodologies, and familiarization with interviewing techniques related to counseling, family studies, marriage and family therapy and child life fields.

Facilitate clinically oriented seminar where students receive case supervision and are required to prepare regular video presentation working towards final case presented and oral exam.

Co-teaching masters level specialty course covering Narrative therapy and social construction as important developments in social theory and in clinical practice. Uses narratives and the role they play in a person’s life through language and meaning systems. Examines issues of power, collaboration, culture, community, and re- authoring narratives, particularly in the works of Michael White and David Epston.

Facilitating medical simulation training with surgical residents to develop skills of “breaking bad news” comprised of telling family members when a loved one has died. Responsibilities included structuring simulated event, reflecting family experiences and debriefing with medical residents and attending physicians about simulation experience with a focus on enhancing medical resident communication skills with patients and their families.

Clinic Manager and Marriage and Family Therapist. Developed and operated a private practice in a group practice setting. Approximately 5-10 hours per week of individual, couple and family therapy to clients with a number of different clinical issues while fulfilling the legal and ethical responsibilities of a Marriage and Family Therapist.

Behavioral Health Intern. Provide Medical Family Therapy to couples, individuals, and families. Work in collaboration with family resources center staff, care coordinators, and physicians to assess patients and provide brief therapy, community resources, and psychoeducation to patients in primary care and family medicine. Focus is how health and wellness affects the family and the individual, working through issues around medical compliance, substance abuse, stress, and caregiving. Shadow primary care physicians during patient appointments providing brief interventions and psychoeducation.

Medical Family Therapist Intern. Provide Medical Family Therapy to couples, individuals, and families. Work in collaboration with social workers, coordinators, and physicians to assess patients and provide therapy and psychoeducation to patients awaiting liver or kidney transplantation. Focus is how chronic illness affects the family and the individual, working through issues around anticipatory loss, substance abuse, stress, and caregiving. Shadow nurse practitioners during patient appointments providing brief interventions and psychoeducation.

Psychosocial Rehabilitation Specialist. Administered biopsychosocial assessments to welfare recipients requesting mental health services. Assessed individual, couples, and families referred from CalWORKS. Provided individual, couple, and family therapy to clients with a number of different clinical issues while fulfilling the legal and ethical responsibilities of a Marriage and Family Therapist. Additional responsibilities included attending weekly team meetings and clinical supervision, attend meetings with community partners and disseminate information to clinic staff, populate clinic reports and ensure county mandated goals were achieved on a monthly basis. Maintained client files as required by county contract and agency standards. Provided community outreach on a weekly basis to inform welfare participants of mental health services available. Assessed client needs and linked them to appropriate community resources. Maintained communication with employment case manager to reduce mental health barriers to employment.

Marriage and Family Therapist Trainee. Attended weekly team meetings and clinical supervision. Collaborated with psychiatrist in providing services to adults and family. Helped clients obtain treatment goals agreed upon by client and therapist. Maintained client files as required by county contract and agency standards. Coordinated contacts with other public and private organizations and individuals as needed for effectively serving clients. Outreach to identified population to effectively reach those in need of services. Provided crisis intervention services and referrals that relate to mental health services. Participated in department specific special projects and activities as well as agency event fundraisers, annual meetings, and open houses.
