I strive to provide a safe, loving, and stable environment which encourages self-assurance, independent play, and personal responsibility while leading by example in ways such as character and academic developmental activities, healthy living, self-reliance, and personal accountability. I strive to encourage children to spend their time where it matters most: learning, healthy lifestyles, caring for self and others through fun and exciting ways. For example: rather than providing a vegetable and asking the child to eat it, we would walk to the grocery store, pick out a vegetable, and finallyI would supervise the preparation of the vegetable (washing, peeling, etc). In my experience, 1-9 year old children enjoy these activities.I also encourage free play. In my experience children are less likely to complain of "being bored" if they are frequently given the opportunity of free play. I've seen free play benefit the entire person especially in areas of imagination, creativity, confidence, feeling refreshed, and overall personal development. During "free play" I prefer to be present without playing a role. I choose activities for myself which encourage the child by example without dictating their actions (i.e. I will color, draw, read, build legos/blocks, fix doll hair, etc.). Undeniably, there are innumerable health and wellness benefits to being outdoors. Weather permitting, during an 8 hour period I plan to spend 3-5 hours outside. This time includes active play/exercise (walking running, biking, sledding, building snowmen, running through sprinklers, jumping in puddles, etc) as well as inactive play (picnics, reading under a tree, nature gazing, etc).I prefer to avoid TV entirely but I support parental decisions (and see illness as an exception to the rule). In cases where children need down time, I prefer to employ children's audio books, reading aloud to children, letting young children "read" to themselves or to me, and encourage children to love reading.
