My research aims to understand how multiple layers of advantages and disadvantages contribute to socioeconomic inequalities in health and health behaviors, using quantitative and qualitative methods.

New York

I worked on the “Nudging New York: using data science to increase healthcare access in underserved communities” study. This study aims to increase attendance rates using personalized behavioral interventions. My tasks were: obtaining ethical approval, preparing scientific publications, conducting a systematic literature review to identify interventions, transcribing interviews, collaborating with participating clinics, collecting data, and submitting new grant proposals.

The Hague, The Netherlands

I set up a behavioral insights team. This team consists of 35 colleagues, and together we have set up 5 behavioral experiments. By applying behavioral insights, we hope to increase the effectiveness of our policy, interventions, and communication. I regularly give presentations, workshops, and advice on projects, and I attempt to inspire others to apply behavioral insights to their work.

Carried out research on health in all policies. In addition, I introduced behaviorally informed policy-making by (amongst others) networking, giving workshops, and initiating experiments in the city. In addition, I analyzed data on poverty and health in the Hague (published in Elst M van der, Verra S. Armoede en gezondheid. Resultaten uit de Gezondheidsenquête 2016. The Interbestuurlijk Trainee Netwerk (network for trainees in public services/ administration) brings together young professionals from different levels of government and stimulates them to discuss and advise on current policy issues. This advice will contribute to efficient and smart governance. My task was to organize inspiring and educational activities for trainees on a monthly basis.

The Policy Research Group aims to create evidence-based policy recommendations that lead to improved population health, well-being, and economic stability. I primarily worked on the Safer Care Pathways project on patient safety in mental healthcare settings in the UK, funded by the Health Foundation.

As a visiting student, I worked for the Global Health Access Policy project. This research project investigated global medical travel, and dealt for instance with international quality standards and economic and legal frameworks. Within this project, I have set up my own research on the experiences of Dutch medical travellers, and assessed what pitfalls are experienced in the process.
