Head Of Recruiting, Learning & Talent DevelopmentOtis Elevator Company Aug 2013 - Jul 2014UsA little creativity and process improvement goes a long way. I was promoted for leading a number of large training events involving employees, trainers, and executives from all over North America. My confidence got a boost and I was more comfortable with ambiguity, presenting, making my teammates laugh, telling them about my strange cartoon-like dreams, putting myself out there. My customers taught me a ton about relationships and getting buy-in. As I got more comfortable leading L&D, I made each of the programs more productive, personable, and fun because everyone wished they were locked in by a snow storm (I'm pretty sure the snow event is legendary). I then got more involved in recruiting again but this time it was to fine-tune the company's recruitment process and increase the pipeline of qualified sales talent by implementing a candidate assessment. I presented and received approval through UTCs Legal team to test out LinkedIn and presented the results to 500 UTC executives. See I had all these ideas and this particular boss would actually want me to initiate (some of) them. The LinkedIn business case was approved successfully putting Otis Elevator on the LinkedIn map, subsequently approving UTC and all subsidiaries to leverage LinkedIn as a target branding and recruitment tool. Smart move! My boss then encouraged me to get my MBA - fast-forward, it took the first class to convince me to start a recruiting business as I mapped out a convincing business plan, and 3 classes total before starting. This roll developed my leadership, project management, presentation skills, and potential. Did I make mistakes stepping so far out of my comfort zone? You bet. My advice: If there is a gap between your current comp and what you think you should be paid, get ready to step up to the plate. -
Manager, Talent ManagementOtis Elevator Company Jul 2011 - Aug 2013UsI joined Otis in hopes to learn more on the leadership side and take a break from hands-on recruiting. I ended up learning more than I ever expected. In addition to overseeing recruiting, I had 3 months to learned how to coordinate and lead Otis Elevator NA's Learning and Development. I was referred by former colleagues who were working for sister companies at the time. UTC loves process efficiency, had a way to measure it which I loved. Once again, I was working with some really super smart people who handled their responsibilities and pressure extremely well, and had an appreciation for creativity and laughs. My boss grew to like me and was an expert at identifying and bringing out potential in his team. I passed his first test with the redesign of Otis Elevator's recruitment material and brochures. Not long after, this new role gave me the biggest challenge of my career within 3 months when I led almost 100 employees, trainers, and executives through a 2 week program right when that Snoctober / October snow storm hit. No electricity for 9 days of the 2 week program that I have never led and people who I have never met before. My boss, one of the absolute best bosses ever and straight-shooter to me, called me to politely inquire about the status on day 2 or 3. It ended with "I got this". 2 weeks later, my closing remarks at dinner were in poem format (I really had nothing to lose at this point and hope I have this somewhere). This program ended as the highest rated, most effective measured program since its initiation (25 years ago?). I learned a ton. I took the risk to take this responsibility on, something that I have never done before with 100s of people I don't know, and pull it off during that snow storm. My ancestors would say it put hair on my chest, it validated that risk can be mitigated with determination, hard work, and leadership. But wow, look for a challenge, you will find it, or it will find you. Growth occurs here! -
Senior Analytics Recruiter, Enterprise-WideTravelers Nov 2007 - Jun 2011New York, Ny, UsThe most challenging Recruiting position for me, I was Travelers first dedicated enterprise-wide recruiter for Research & Development. This one took me a while to get in the groove. I learned how to work with and recruit really smart people - Statisticians, Mathematicians, and Actuaries who were fun to work with. Turns out there are many who enjoy poker and had a company softball team, Angry Dragons. The hiring managers and candidates put me through negotiation bootcamp which was helpful in developing a highly productive offer strategy. I was tasked with getting to know how to recruit for this complex skillset, develop a pipeline of talent at all levels, and centralize the process to customers across the enterprise. I initially jumped in overseeing a high volume of interviews, with zero hires, big problem. I was intimidated by the smart customers and candidates. I made some mistakes, and doubted my skills. I was grumpy, like please don't talk with me at the printer-grumpy. Fully challenged, with the pressure on, I realized what they meant when they said I had to create the recruitment process. So I went for it. Over time, we interviewed less, and began interviewing higher quality candidates. I joined R&Ds softball team, started having fun, then it started working. The first thing I got ahold of was process. I had a little score card that I kept track of and it motivated me. The number of interviews and offers, and the number of offers accepted. Less in person interviews, more hires. Setting expectations took on a whole new level. I was still growing. I successfully developed a pipeline of talent for all levels, implemented new strategies which have been split off since, and received recognition for my results. I became a dad and started growing up here. Challenging, valuable experience, and many colleagues and customers are friends today. I draw from my experience at Travelers daily, they have my vote for "Top Large Employer of Choice"! -
Senior Financial And Accounting Recruiter, The Hartford And Hartford Life Usa And UkThe Hartford 2006 - 2007Hartford, Ct, UsAfter HTSC, I worked with another great team at an enterprise level in Corporate, Hartford Life in Simsbury and MN. We had fun, and the hiring managers and executives were great to work with. I copied the process of learning IT recruiting into the Finance and Accounting world. Then, The Hartford sent me on my first trip to the UK, quite challenging project but what an awesome experience! I was still just a kid here. Great company, top employer. -
It Recruiter, Hartford Technology Services Company (Htsc)The Hartford 2003 - 2006Hartford, Ct, UsMy network opened the door to my first experience in Large Corporate America which could not have been with a better company. Entering the corporate world as a Headhunter required adjustment. I was a little aggressive and stood out for eating raw yams but luckily worked with a few teams who loosened me up a bit. The HIG brought me in as a contractor. I had 2 weeks to learn IT Recruitment, built and enhanced the IT candidate pipeline, and was converted to full-time. HTSC was my favorite, I loved the work and the people and had fun at 55 Farmington. -
Executive RecruiterGrayling Associates Apr 2001 - Jul 2003Bloomfield, Ct, UsI took a risk, put my head down here and went for it. I quickly learned I knew nothing. I was taught the value of consistency and persistency in business and recruiting by highly skilled colleagues with the gift of being the most influential recruiters I have ever worked with. Recruited top sales producers in the Life Insurance and Financial Planning industry. -
Account Manager And RecruiterAerotek 1999 - 2001Hanover, Maryland, UsWhat is recruiting? I had no idea what I was doing. Lucky for me, Aerotek had awesome training, and SUPER FUN colleagues who are great friends for life, colleagues multiple times over AND customers! I actually started on the IT side and got kicked out to the non technical recruiting, then promoted to sales. Learned a ton and had lots of fun. I'm sure all of the above is still true for the company today.
