Dr. Andrew M. Angus-Whiteoak Email and Phone Number
Andrew returned to Manchester University in 2021 following one-years’ hiatus as Laboratory Operations Manager at Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Trust, running a Covid-19 testing laboratory. During this time, he was awarded a four-year Honorary Fellowship from the University of Exeter for his work leading the UK’s first LAMP-PCR testing lab, ahead of national roll-out based on the Exeter model. This involved working with DEFRA, NHS and university representatives, and creating a training programme to ensure uniformity of lab practice across the UK. He also led in writing the hospital’s transgender care policy. Having enjoyed both Technical and Post-Graduate positions in research, his return to Manchester saw a return to this purely lab-based work. He became more heavily involved in EDI work by joining the SBS-EDI committee. However, he missed the people-oriented aspects of management, having led a team of 32 at the NHS, as well as dynamic organisational aspects. In 2023 he successfully gained his current position as Technical Operations Manager, an engaging and enjoyably challenging post in a very supportive team.Outside of work he is an artist attending regular life drawing sessions, and a gamer (Cthulhu and other tabletop role playing games). He volunteers with Guide Dogs for the Blind as Sighted Guide. He enjoys live music and dance, and has the life goal of retiring aboard a sea-going vessel in the Mediterranean with his partner.

At the time I did not feel confident enough to apply for a higher grade, despite the PhD, due to the bullying that had occurred years before at MMU. My introduction to UofM restored my confidence and belief in others, and I was very sad to be unable to renew my contract due to the lockdowns. However, I was determined I would return. -
