He joined the Genoa branch of the Istituto di Elettronica e di Ingegneria dell'Informazione e delle Telecomunicazioni with the aim to study Networked Robot Architectures, Internet Robotics and Human-robot Interfaces, for Marine Robotics, Service and Field Robotics, Educational Robotics.Furthermore he develops studies on the Philosophical, Social and Ethical Implications of Robotics.He is serving the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society as Corresponding Co-chair of the Technical Committee on Roboethics, as Co-Chair of the Human Rights and Ethics Committee, and as a Distinguished Lecturer.

He has been involved in projects of dissemination and education and in 2000 he founded the association School of Robotics.The aim of the association is to promote the knowledge of the science of Robotics among students and young people, in the range of the pre doc school, and to teachers and the general public. Its goal is to create a chain of transmission between research laboratories, education, industry and society at large. School of Robotics organises: conferences, classes, videoconferences, documentaries, publications and events, based on the pedagogical principle of “live science”, structured to bring students close to the edge of scientific research in the field of ICT and Robotics. School of Robotics has acquired over nine years of activity a national leading position in the field of Educational Robotics, as well as a respected role on the European related scene.Its strong points are based on its rapidly growing network of Italian schools, called Robot@Scuola, and on its penetrating dissemination activity in the field of robotics, and of socially-related robotics issues, via public events and the Internet.

Founder and Scientific Responsible of the CNR-IAN Marine Robotics Department (Robotlab) aimed to develop Experimental Robotics in extreme environment.Research topics: mission control in UUVs, NGC and SLAM, real-time HCI, tele-robotics and Internet Robotics.His approach was the exploitation at sea of working prototypes developed in a Virtual Lab environment. He led the first Italian underwater robotics campaign in Antarctica during the 9th Italian expedition in 1993-1994 and the following 13th expedition in 1997-1998 and 17thh expedition in 2001-02.He led the first Italian underwater robotics campaign in Arctic during 2002.

He worked on real-time computer graphics for simulation and control of navigation and maritime traffic, automation and control techniques, marine data-collection systems and large scale vessel traffic service systems.He developed in Messina an experimental radar campaign to design a Vessel Traffic Service in the Straits.He developed in Genoa an experimental Mediterranean Control Center in the framework of the EC project COST 301 - Shore Based Marine Navigation Systems.

Designer of fault-tolerant multiprocessor architectures for fail-safe control systems. He took part to the development of the power management and automation system of the Italian Railway Ferry “Garibaldi”. He was part of the design team of the new automation systems of Italian Railway Stations’ Central Apparatus.

He developed a number of arcade video games based on two-dimensional graphics running on Intel 8080 and Zilog Z80 platforms.
