Coordination of an EU-funded project: PyroFlex – network on pyro-metallurgical expertise and infrastructure for residue treatment

Expert work in the field of waste management; more specifically, management of waste and by-products from metallurgical industry.

Design, development and administration of projects co-financed by EU funding programs

Evaluation of project proposals submitted under stage 2 of the FP7's two-stage call on "Environment" in relation to topic "Turning waste into resource through innovative technologies, processes and services".

As a member of the "Hi-temp"​ group (High Temperature Processes and Industrial Ecology) at the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (MTM) of KU Leuven I was mostly involved in applied research (approx. 70 % of work time). I took part in a large number of joint projects with many of MTM's industrial partners such as: Umicore, Campine, Metallo Chimique, Therm Phos, Arcelor Mittal, Posco and Codelco. The projects were mostly related to diminishing the ecological footprint of the metals/materials sector and increasing its environmental sustainability. More specifically I was working on issues such as: reducing the use of primary natural resources, increasing the use of secondary materials, minimizing waste quantity, maximizing the lifetime of refractory products, avoiding the use and generation of hazardous materials.The rest of my work time was dedicated to tutoring Master and PhD students as well as to didactic assignments.

As an R&D Manager my duties included:- Develop and organize a team able to fulfil R&D's commitments and tasks- Conduct project meetings and allocate approved projects to teams- Supervise and provide leadership on all assigned projects- Draft reports and present them to the company CEO- Develop and maintain effective relationships with the other departments and production units

As an assistant professor at the Department of Non-ferrous Metals and Alloys of UCTM Sofia I was mostly involved in didactical assignments (approx. 70 % of my work time). These included:- Tutoring Bachelor, Master and PhD Students- Supervising laboratory sessions and giving seminars in the following subject areas: - Basic principles of pyro- and hydro-metallurgy - Phase equilibria in pyro-metallurgical systems - Extraction and refining of Cu, Pb, Zn & accompanying metalsThe rest of my work time was dedicated to research in the field of non-ferrous metallurgy with emphasis on flash smelting technologies for copper-making.
