Intern
As part of my Masters course I completed an internship of 240 hours, 180 of these were spent assisting Professor Nick Draper and the Head Sport Science Technician Gavin Blackwell with undergraduate and postgraduate physiology labs, completing and extensive update of the Exercise Physiology Lab Manual, and assisting with the 'Big Experiment'. As a lab assistant I learnt how to use and calibrate a variety of physiology testing equipment from old school Gold Standard Douglas Bags to the modern Cosmed K5. I was then entrusted with instructing and supervising other students using the equipment. The 'Big Experiment' is a Ministry of Education funded program which introduces intermediate and primary aged children to the scientific method by having them complete basic physiological/sport testing on each other. Multiple sessions were completed at each school involved as the students were taught to complete the testing themselves, supervised while they tested each other, and then shown how to do basic statistics on their collected data.
Intern
I completed an internship at Vertex Altitude Training. They utilize an industrial hypoxicator to offer their clients simulated high altitude training with out the need for travel or awkward masks. The clientele ranges from casual gym goers wanting to boost their calorie burn and cardio to high level athletes wanting to get a foot up on their competition, as well as mountaineers preping for high altitude treks. For my internship I learnt about simulated altitude training and completed a spin bike based sprint protocol trail. Which aimed to determine if simulated altitude would result in greater power out put increases than if the protocol was completed at sea level. The protocol was determined by my supervisor Charles Nimmo. While I recruited the subjects, organised the session times, and carried out the protocol.
