Laboratory Coordinator & Teaching Assistant

Current

Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa

● Leading a team of lab demonstrators, ensuring their training and equipment readiness for experiments across 7 labs. ● Overseeing each laboratory's day-to-day operations, ensuring that all experiments and procedures are performed correctly while managing supplies and equipment. ● Creating presentations for both virtual and in-person demonstrations, enhancing experiment comprehension and marking student reports with constructive feedback for improvement. ● Marking student reports and providing constructive feedback on their performance and areas of development before the start of the next lecture. ● Evaluate the demonstrator's performance based on the quality of the experiments, student feedback and how efficiently they marked student scripts. ● Providing suggestions to the Lecturers on improvements that can be made to improve student performance and facilitate maximum absorption of the concepts being presented.

Feb 2020 - Present

Researcher: Doctorate In Chemical Engineering

● Utilizing an initial plant-based waste (Mangosteen shell) to synthesize activated carbon (MS-AC) via a one-step carbonization/activation process. ● Functionalizing MS-AC with heteroatoms including Nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen to improve the material’s wettability and electrical capability. ● Performing electrochemical analysis in an aqueous/ionic liquid medium ( EmimTFO/ 2.5 M KNO3) aiming toward higher energy density. ● Conducting electrochemical measurements using a Biologic potentiostat/galvanostat unit in a three-electrode and two- electrode configuration using MS-AC and co-doped MS-AC as the electrode materials. ● Utilizing the electrochemical measurements to determine the cycle life of the device using Coulombic efficiency, capacitance retention, and voltage holding measurements.

Feb 2021 - Dec 2023

Researcher: Masters In Chemical Engineering

● Added constant amounts of pristine precursors (Nickel, Cobalt, and Manganese Hydroxides) to various quantities of the nanocarbon graphene foam to reach an optimal composite. ● Conducted the morphological study of the as-prepared nanocomposites using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization methods.● Estimated the surface areas/pore size distributions, compositions, and structures of the materials using Brunauer Emmett-Teller (BET) surface analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy. ● Assessed the as-synthesized electrochemical performances in a three-electrodes configuration. This evaluation was done through the analysis of the cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and life cycling stability test. ● Finally, assembled a hybrid device with the optimized material (NiCoMnTh/GF) as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode in a 1 molar potassium hydroxide electrolyte. The specific capacity of the composite was 2-3 times higher than the pristine materials.

Jan 2019 - Apr 2021

Chemical Engineer: In-Service Trainee

Johannesburg Area, South Africa

● Collected samples to analyze the beer's PH, alcohol content, CO2 content, and original gravity. ● Sampled the yeast to analyze for consistency and viability to determine its efficiency for beer fermentations. ● Formed part of the team that conducted investigations on the testing of the beer membrane filter modules and identified the problems experienced were due to excessive pressure on the units. ● Operated the brewing plants with a team leader to ensure no downtime to packaging is recorded and the production processes (cellars, filtration, and utility) functioned efficiently. ● Provided reports on the production or any issues encountered during the shift, e.g., number of brews made, the bright beer tanks that were produced, and successfully completed the process through to packaging.
