I traveled to Rwanda with 30 students for the Wharton Global Modular Course on “Conflict, Leadership, and Change: Lessons from Rwanda.” Rwanda has a traumatic history to share with the world: The 1994 brutal genocide of the Tutsi in Rwanda left about one million people dead in a period of only three months. Through state-led reconciliation and rebuilding process, Rwanda has achieved impressive development gains in the 23 years since the genocide. For example, according to the 2016 Global Gender Gap Report, Rwanda ranks 5th out of 144 countries in the world when it comes to gender equality, while the US lags behind others at 45th. Through intensive leadership case studies (including a meeting with His Excellency President Paul Kagame), visits to national sites, and class discussions, we learned how the country has rebuilt with remarkable success. My topic of study: “How Rwanda beats the U.S. in gender equality and what lessons we can learn from it to close the gender gap in the US tech industry?”
