As climate change impacts continue to influence the health and daily lives of human beings, small island communities find their health and healthcare infrastructure to be vulnerable. through an alliance with the International Medical Corps and several Regional Partners the shoreline conservation initiative created an assessment of Health impacts in the Monroe County community and provided a tool for strategic planning and response to anticipated impacts. I served as the public health and Monroe County, Florida subject matter expert on this project, providing the localized strategic approach paradigm for the team and tailoring the research to the targeted populations.

Each week the students and I would take to the lot alongside the classroom that housed Summer Camp. We pulled weeds, turned compost, planted seeds, measured and watered plants, and observed the processes of our efforts. The theme of camp was Peace and Justice with a focus on Environmental Justice and Leadership. I volunteered on a daily basis to support the students in defining a sense of place within their community and exploring their own abilities to create positive impact. I coordinated field trips, conducted small and large group learning sessions, and supported the Black Educators Group's mission to improve the learning experiences of children in Bahama Village in their own neighborhood. My ongoing relationship with the group includes fund raising and administrative support, as well as community event volunteering.

During the last semester of my graduate MPH studies through FIU online, I worked as a Public Health Intern for the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County. I spent four months learning the workings and operations of the small, local, county health department as it functions within the 67 county state-wide framework. My semester work addressed a question of resource scarcity in the county-wide community and identified a need for resource coordination and the removal of bureaucratic obstacles to collaboration, particularly those presented by the unique geography of Monroe County, Florida. Methodologies included interviews with community leaders within the local public health system, employment of the MAPP assessment and planning paradigm, and exploration of the ecological model for evidence-based public health planning.
