I have founded Australia’s first charity that directly supports, advocates and campaigns for injured patients, called the FairCare Alliance. We provide much-needed support and advocacy for Victorians inadvertently injured in the healthcare system. The generation of this idea came after my own healthcare injury and recovery journey. There is no coordinated support or compensation scheme for Australian injured patients. We need to hear the voices of injured patients, understand their experiences and needs, and start a reform agenda to address the gaps in our systems. You can learn more about at faircare.org.au.I have recently left a senior management role at Safer Care Victoria to set up a new healthcare (patient safety) advocacy service (watch this space: paladinadvocates.au). Prior to that, I led Government Department of Health teams and Ministerial Councils to review mortality and severe morbidity in healthcare. I've designed or established statewide programs and policies in acute care settings (hospitals), relating to patient safety, hospital performance, autopsy services, surgery/perioperative care, maternity, newborn and paediatric services. This included Koori Maternity Services, Public Homebirth, Eligible Midwives, emergency neonatal referral, the Victorian Perinatal Autopsy Service, Victorian patient-led escalation of care and and establishment of a set of performance indicators for maternity and newborn services. In my earlier life, I was a Registered Nurse and Midwife and worked as a Safety and Quality Manager at the Royal Women's Hospital. In that role, I managed local and statewide contributions towards improving the standards and models of low-risk midwifery care, consumer information and established the first online antenatal care guidelines for routine pregnancy care in Victoria.
