With the loud transient noises of the arresting cable banging on the deck of USS Ronald Reagan, we tirelessly worked with the sailors to collect speech utterances in the dark control room while trying to overcome the seasickness. After many years, I still have a vivid memory of the unusual data collection endeavor of the first machine learning project conducted at Optimal Synthesis Inc.Since then, I have been fortunate to lead several NASA- and DoD-sponsored machine learning projects including developing a noise-robust speech recognition system for Carrier Air Traffic Control that aims to land N-UCAS automatically, a generic automatic recognition system for handwritten Arabic-style script documents, a computer-vision based surveillance and analytics system for airport ramp area operations, a speech-enabled simulation agent that supports NASA human-in-the-loop air traffic control experiments, and a human-automation speech interface of an AR/VR-based maintenance training platform.Specialties: machine learning (ML), deep learning, artificial intelligence (AI), natural language processing (NLP), automatic speech recognition (ASR), speech synthesis, computer vision, signal processing, audio technology.
