Parks Canada is an agency of the Government of Canada that governs all National Parks, National Historic Sites, and National Marine Conservation Areas. The Rouge National Urban Park is the first and only National Urban Park in Canada and is unique in that it composes of a multitude of habitats, including farmland, while surrounded by urban municipals (Scarborough, Markham, Pickering, Whitchurch-Stouffville, Uxbridge). When I was one of the five Public Outreach and Education Interns, I proudly represented the Rouge National Urban Park at various Greater Toronto Area (GTA) community events and festivals to increase public awareness of Park Canada initiatives and updates regarding the park. Some of the events I attended included: Toronto Pride, Taste of Little Italy, Festival of South Asia, Stouffville Ribfest, and Tamilfest. I also delivered educational presentations, interpretive programming, and staffing portable displays and exhibits in both English and French at public libraries and partner venues (such as Ripley's Aquarium and Toronto Zoo) to increase Canadians' understanding and support for Park Canada's natural and culture heritage spaces. I also led guided hikes within the Rouge National Urban Park as a part of the Parkbus, Culturelink, and Naturelink programs that connected tourists, citizens, and newcomers to the outdoors. The general attendance and interactions of these events ranged from 1 individual to ~800 individuals.

Specifically, I measured and prepared brine shrimp and paramecium, and identified illnesses and diseases in zebrafish to prevent contamination to neighbouring fishes. I also had the opportunity to attend weekly lab meetings to discuss the research progress within the lab. During my time at the Scott Lab, I fed and cleaned up to 750 tanks per shift.
