About Victor Cappuzzo
Currently, I am a Mechanical Design Engineer at InMotion, working on the electromechanical design of motors and test equipment. I recently graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, majoring in Robotics and Mechatronics, and minoring in Computer Science. I love being an engineer because I get to be hands on with my work and I enjoy the problem solving process. I also enjoy CAD design and fabrication with 3D-printers, manual mills, lathes, routers, and CNC machines. Engineering excites me because I love to see ideas get turned into a reality.

Mechanical Design Engineer
Team Vice President
Team Website: https://www.robogrinder.com/This year, I am taking on the new challenge of becoming the team's Vice President as well as technical lead for the Hero robot. I plan on getting new recruits as hands on as possible while also dividing the work evenly among my members. I managed a team of 90 students to design 7 unique combat robots for the DJI RoboMaster competition and ensured that the team worked effectively by handling human resource-like issues between members. I will strive to lead by example and ensure that my team is running efficiently.
"Hero" Robot Technical Lead
Team Website: https://www.robogrinder.com/Organized a team of 15 mechanical and electrical engineers to design, fabricate, wire, and program a 150-pound robot that launches both 17mm and 42mm projectiles.
"Hero" Robot Pilot
I drove the "Hero" robot for the RoboMaster North American Competition for the 2021 and 2022 competitions. I was responsible for the setup, operation, and repair of one of the team's three robots in the competition.
"Hero" Project And Mechanical Branch Member
Team Website: https://www.robogrinder.com/In my semester on the team, I participated in building the "Hero" class robot and drove the "Hero" robot for the RoboMaster North American Competition in 2021. Specifically, I designed new components for the turret and chassis systems in SolidWorks to ensure the robot could reliably and consistently launch golf balls at 10 meters per second. I manufactured the robot using CNC routing, 3D printing, and power tools.
Research Engineering Undergraduate
The Research Engineering Undergraduate is a research position at Virginia Tech's Assistive Robotics Lab that included designing a lower-body exoskeleton for assistive walking and lifting. The exoskeleton was designed using Fusion360. In particular, I designed the waistband of the exoskeleton. The initial structural analysis of this exoskeleton was completed using hand calculations learned in mechanical design courses. I wrote MATLAB code that optimized the outer and inner diameter of an aluminum tube that was to be used in the design based on structural integrity and weight. Final structural integrity was checked using simulations/finite element analysis on Fusion360. While I will not be working in the Assistive Robotics Lab full time, like I did in the Summer of 2022, I will still be working there part-time in order to complete and test the exoskeleton design.
