My position requires me to undertake comparative sociological-anthropological studies across the major political constituencies of Borneo: Brunei Darussalam, the Malaysian Borneo states of Sarawak and Sabah, and the five provinces of Indonesian Borneo (Kalimantan). These studies also have to be situated in the wider Southeast Asian region and in the ways in which the Borneo states interact with ASEAN. Borneo Studies cannot survive in isolation from the wider region of which it is a part.

To undertake research on the sociology and anthropology of Southeast Asia, specifically to develop a research programme in Borneo Studies, and to support capacity-building activities on behalf of early career staff at the university.

Directing and overseeing the research, training and development of the next generation of teachers and researchers in Asian Studies (Chinese and Japanese Studies) in the UK.

Emeritus Professor of South East Asian StudiesExecutive Director of the White Rose East Asia Centre, a joint advanced research, training and development venture between the Department of East Asian Studies at Leeds University and the School of East Asian Studies at Sheffield University in Chinese and Japanese languages and area studies. The nationally funded programme was directed to the development of the next generation of academic staff, equipped with the necessary training in language and in disciplinary skills and knowledge to ensure the continued health of Asian Studies in the higher education sector in the UK.

Overseeing the work of the Centre for South-East Asian Studies as Director and managing the the University Graduate School between 2002 and 2005 (the School was responsible for all postgraduate research students at the University).Also one time Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University and Dean of the School of Social and Political Sciences.
