About Victoria Phillips

Victoria Phillips, Ph.D. is the author of Martha Graham’s Cold War: The Dance of American Diplomacy (Oxford, 2020). Dr. Phillips co-directs the of the Cold War Archival Research Institute at the Wilson Center, Washington, DC, (CWAR), is a Visiting Fellow in the Department of International History at the London School of Economics, and affiliated with the Oxford Center for Life Writing. She is co-founder of the Global Biography Working Group (www.global.bio), co-editor of the Oxford Journal of Christian Ethics: Warfare, and Chair of the Society of Historians of Foreign Relations Committee on Digital Databases and Archival Sharing. She developed CWAR as a cooperative research group and accompanies advanced students to international archives to explore Cold War cultural projects. At the LSE, she won the 2021 university award for Innovation in Teaching. She has taught at Columbia University for the Department of History, European Institute, and Journalism School, as well as at Barnard College. Other positions have included universities in the US and Europe. Her articles have appeared in such varied publications as the New York Times, American Communist History, Dance Chronicle, Ballet News, Dance Research Journal, and Grant's Interest Rate Observer. She has lectured and presented internationally to academic and public audiences. As a pubic historian, she has curated several public exhibitions in the United States and Europe about dance and politics. Dr. Phillips has served on the boards of the Joyce Theater and American Ballet Theatre. At present, she serves on the boards of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the European Institute at Columbia University, and chairs the board of Historic Dance Theatre, pairing scholars with dancers to offer lecture-demonstrations on dance and history. As a staunch believer in the power of curiosity, she is continuing her studies at the City of New York Graduate Center in Biography and Memoir, as well as at the University of St. Andrews in the School of Divinity. She holds a BA (Literature and Writing), an MBA (International Finance), MA and PhD (US History from Columbia University, an MFA (Fiction) and MA (History and Performance Studies) from New York University. Her primary research is held at the Library of Congress as the Victoria Phillips Collection.
