URBAN COLLAGES: Fiddling, exploring, stirring the pot – these are hallmarks of my continually evolving work. However, some things remain the same; I embrace two Japanese terms and they are both incorporated in my work. First, “perfectly imperfect” derived from the term “Wabi-Sabi”; you will find wrinkles, blogs, and imperfections all throughout my work – I work with “no rules and no shoulds” when I create. Secondly, my compositions naturally result from the love of “action and void” found in Japanese garden design, resulting in areas of textural detail and a big portion of soft rest for the eye.Creating Urban Collages feels at home to me. When I photograph, I am looking for the simplest beauty in everyday items – graffiti on a metal sidewalk grate, distorted reflections on downtown building windows, broken glass on a ferry offramp, construction debris, cropped lettering, closeups of landscapes revealing sticks and stones, deteriorating paint on a curb. Following in my father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, I have taken calligraphy classes from a young age. Recently, I concluded that I am not interested in creating perfect lettering, but I adore the sensuality of a letter form. Often, you will find abstracted calligraphy integrated into the Urban Collages.And lastly, the heart of my art – Encaustic Printmaking, or creating original one-of-a-kind prints with warmed beeswax and paper. As I stand at the warmed aluminum palette, gently inhaling the alluring aroma of beeswax, I enter into a meditative place of gentleness and joy as I allow the medium to reveal its beauty. Rustic, atmospheric and textural. Each and every Urban Collage begins with my Encaustic prints.As a workshop teacher, my heart fills with satisfaction as I hear reactions that bubble up from deep within; “You changed my view of art”, “I am in bliss land”, “I experienced full freedom of expression”.
