While articling at Legate Personal Injury Lawyers, I was assigned a variety of tasks to maximize my exposure to litigation practice. I drafted many legal documents, including motion records, facta, statements of law for trial, pleadings, affidavits, pre-trial memoranda, and submissions. As most of the files I assisted with were medical malpractice files, or MVC files involving complicated injuries, I was also tasked with medical and scientific research to ensure that we properly understood all aspects of the file. I also performed legal research on topics such as procedure, capacity, privilege, standard of care, mitigation, and damages.I attended examinations for discovery on at least 4 occasions, prepared lay witnesses for trial, spoke in motions court, and observed highly contentious motions. I was part of the trial team for a MVC trial that lasted three weeks, and a medical malpractice trial that was adjourned at the last minute due to COVID-19. I observed each aspect of the trial and took detailed notes throughout.In addition to my support roles, I completed intake interviews with prospective clients. After each interview, I prepared a summary report with recommendations to the lawyers for discussion at our weekly lawyers’ meeting.

Community Legal Services (CLS) provides free legal advice and representation for members of the community and students at Western University and Fanshawe College. After successfully completing the Litigation Practice coursework in my second year of law school, I applied to work at CLS as one of 12 student supervisors. During the summer, I worked full time representing clients on such matters as Wills and Powers of Attorney, Small Claims Court disputes, Criminal Injury Compensation Board applications, Landlord Tenant Board disputes, and summary criminal offences. I completed initial client interviews, intakes, client management, legal research, legal drafting and filing, and representation in courts and tribunals. All work was docketed and reviewed and approved by lawyers at CLS. During the school year, I continued to work in the clinic while also acting as a supervisor to law students enrolled in Litigation Practice, Criminal Law Advocacy, and Advanced Litigation Practice. I explained how the clinic works, the procedure for managing a file, and was available to answer questions when not in class. I ran weekly “duty hours” with review lawyers to check in with the law students and ensure their files were moving forward. I also mentored two 1L’s who completed some research for me, assisted with client intakes, and accompanied me to court.

In September 2016, I began law school. I resumed my previous role at Pembina in the summer of 2017 as a summer student.

Sarnia, Ontario, Canada

After two summers as a summer student, I was hired as a Rail Consultant at Pembina Pipeline. My duties included providing support to the Rail Strategic Planning Team with an emphasis on timely movement of new tank car equipment. I updated company databases to ensure new tank car inventory was properly monitored and that fleet tank cars that had been leased and subleased were accounted for. I provided support to the logistics team by monitoring rail order scheduling, entering rail tickets, and tracing rail car movements so we could report where any order was at any given time. I was able to provide vacation coverage for different members of the satellite office in their various roles.

Hamilton, Ontario

As a Teaching Assistant, I prepared weekly lesson plans for 24 second-year science students and ran a 2-hour tutorial every week. I marked weekly quizzes and personal reflections submitted by the students. I invigilated midterm exams and marked a portion of the short answers for the class. Throughout the term, I provided ongoing feedback for the students.

Sarnia

I was a summer student in the Sarnia office during the summers of 2014 and 2015. I assisted with logistics analysis, recorded tank car, truck, and reservoir volumes of hydrocarbon products. I provided vacation support as needed and gained a thorough understanding of the different rolls performed by colleagues in the Sarnia office.
