About Victoria P. Mitchell

At GoodParty.org we’re empowering independents and transforming civic leadership! I also share my insights and life @victoriapmitchell (~10k on Instagram) and at www.victoriapmitchell.comBefore this, I was on the leadership team for Burning Man (a global cultural network of 1M+). I served as Director of Business Culture, where I oversaw the nonprofit's $45M revenue. While previously heading city planning, my volunteer teams facilitated 1,500+ groups coming to Burning Man to co-create a temporary city of 80,000 people in the Nevada desert. I created and led a major, city-wide cultural change effort called Cultural Direction Setting. My contributions were featured in Governing Magazine and covered by Forbes. I was previously the Director of Operations at venture-backed, food-tech startup Zesty from early stage to raising $17M in Series A to serving 3 million+ meals. Zesty is now part of DoorDash. I began my career hustling in restaurants and cafes. I learned how to be a facilitator, organizer, public speaker, and leader as a serial volunteer for 15+ years in social justice, community education, schools, and church. I currently volunteer for FairVote Illinois to bring ranked choice voting to Chicago and the state.Navigating change, understanding different cultures, and parsing political perspectives have been necessities in my life. I’ve moved houses 20 times across nearly every region of the U.S. and parts of Canada. I never really fit in anywhere, which at times felt like a liability. Now I see it as a tremendous gift because I can’t help but figure out how to bring people together to make change.

Listed skills include Leadership, Operations Management, Management, Public Speaking, and 25 others.

Our democracy has been corrupted by a two-party system that serves money, not people. That leaves us stuck choosing between the lesser of two evils or feeling rationally apathetic. Whether you’re concerned about climate, privacy, inequality, or our individual freedoms...all are blocked by dysfunctional politics. A majority of eligible voters (over 130M Americans), including more than 50% of Millennials and Gen Z, know the two-party system isn’t representing them.GoodParty.org is building free tools to change the rules and mobilizing digital natives to vote differently. Our technology and movement are helping independent, grassroots candidates from across the political spectrum have a real chance of running and winning elections, for the first time in modern history! We’re an early stage startup with a politically diverse team structured as a Public Benefit Corporation (meaning we’re in this for public good, not profit). GoodParty.org was founded by serial entrepreneur, Farhad Mohit, with over a $1B in exits — Flipagram (now TikTok), Shopzilla, Bizrate. As COO, I oversee our movement building and mobilization efforts, volunteerism, hiring, people operations, biz ops, finance, and organization building. We're bringing together the people and architecting the organization we need to make this change happen. We're uniting all kinds of creators and contributors to give their talents and time so we can reform our democracy. If you're interested in getting involved, we need you! Burning Man is a global cultural network of 1+ million, including 90+ events around the world. We're best known for Black Rock City, a unique city co-created by its 80,000 citizens each year in the Nevada desert (similar in size to Santa Fe, New Mexico). I was a volunteer and community member for six years before working for Burning Man in 2017. I first oversaw city planning. The volunteer teams I led socially designed, mapped, and literally laid out the city. This involved city planning and community development directly with 1,500+ groups from around the world who comprise 60k of the 80k total population. Along the way I had the privilege of representing Burning Man at the US Conference of Mayors, in Governing Magazine, and a talk I gave at the Culturati conference was written up in Forbes. Facing long-held cultural tensions, including issues of class division, I created and led the Cultural Direction Setting initiative. This strategy and change framework deeply engaged 7,000 community members in a visioning process. By empowering volunteer community leaders to be at the helm of this project every step of the way, we turned tensions and feedback into a clear direction forward with operationalized solutions. We modeled practices for diversity, equity, and inclusion in volunteer engagement and project outcomes. I went on to establish and become Director of Business Culture where I served on the leadership team, oversaw the organization's $45M primary revenue stream (ticketing), and explored diversifying our earned income while doing right by our culture. When the pandemic hit, I created the financial contingency model to guide our CEO and Board through the unknowns ahead. I moved on from Burning Man because the siren call to figure out what was going on in our democracy grew too strong to ignore. I had saved up for years to take time off at some point, which turned into nine nomadic months of driving around the country and ultimately joining Good Party!

I've consulted over the years. In 2017-2018 I focused on operations and finance. I overhauled financial systems and built automated analysis tools for an international digital marketing and technology services provider based in India. I set up operations, fulfillment procedures, and trained team members for a children’s clothing subscription box startup.

Jan 2017 - Oct 2018

Director Of Operations

San Francisco, California, Us

I led operations and people operations at Zesty from early stage days to $17M Series A to serving 3 million+ meals. We leveraged tech and nutrition to build a better, healthier catering service, which was later acquired by Square. I directly led the largest department of 20+ and oversaw 300+ frontline staff. I reported to the CEO.I learned how to scale up a complex operation to serve 50,000 meals each week, including leading the launch of our second market. From the ground up I built, grew, and led our services to clients, live support, logistics, inventory, business operations, and legal. Given I come from the food service industry with its high turnover, I didn't want our staff delivering and catering to be treated as anything close to disposable. Our operations teams built a thriving, co-supportive community for and *with* our staff. My two-pronged role also involved leading people operations, where I learned how to scale an organization from <10 to 80+ full-time employees. I built out and oversaw hiring, staff experience, culture, company goals, metrics, performance, office management, facilities, and HR. We cultivated a vibrant, metrics-driven, actionable organizational culture, living out values like 'Analysis over Blame' and 'Team over Ego.' Zesty was a startup backed by Index Ventures, Founders Fund, Forerunner Ventures, Y Combinator, SV Angel, 500 Startups, among others. Zesty was acquired by Square's Caviar division in 2018, then Caviar was sold to DoorDash in 2019, where Zesty’s technology and operations are still being utilized today.

Nov 2014 - Dec 2016

Operations Manager

San Francisco, California, Us

First operations hire in early stage immediately after Y Combinator (YC W14) when Zesty pivoted from a B2C app to a B2B catering company. I was a department of one for many months. The journey of building Zesty's talented, diverse, empowered team from those early days into what it became is something I'll never forget.

Jun 2014 - Nov 2014

Catering & Commissary Operations Manager

San Francisco, California, Us

What started as a third simultaneous job working on the cafe floor became my first job in management. The leadership skills I learned in my volunteer life thankfully translated. I was quickly promoted to be the assistant manager for our busiest Financial District location. I saw an opportunity to build up our catering sales downtown, then took over and grew catering for all five locations. When The Plant opened up a commissary kitchen to centralize our catering program, juice program, bakery, large-scale prep, and distribution, I was promoted to lead the transition and manage day-to-day sales and operations of the facility. This included rebranding our juice program, designing restaurant branding and signage, and leading business operations. Zesty was a fledgling startup that approached The Plant to be a catering partner. In vetting their service, I ended up with my next job!The Plant Cafe Organic is a sustainable, 99% organic cafe and restaurant business. Live healthy, be healthy.

Feb 2012 - Jun 2014

Food Service & Graphic Designer

So Many Jobs

Proud of my roots working in restaurants and cafes from 2006 until I joined Zesty in 2014. I worked three jobs simultaneously from 2007-2008 in St. Louis and did so again from 2011-2012 in San Francisco, including freelancing as a self-taught graphic designer. I started out as a dishwasher. I also volunteered extensively during this time period, to the point where it sometimes felt like I was living two lives. I learned how to make ends meet, wear multiple hats, problem solve with grace when upset customers would scream at me, and talk to anyone!
