Of all these students, from the ones that I knew at Stanford during my nine years there, and at Virginia Tech for the last 22, I have become close to perhaps 200 of them at the undergraduate and graduate school levels. And of these, although I don't think that I have ever met a serious student that I didn't like, there have been a select few that I have recognized as extraordinarily special people, people who shine in the perfect combination of intellect and spirit. Tor Waschenko is certainly one of them. We met nearly three years ago in a class that she was taking from me. As an unfulfilled engineering major at that time, I watched her bravely follow her dream as an interior design major in the School of Architecture + Design. WOW! Tor has reached full stride as a brilliant student, but she still carries, as she always has, a remarkable resolve, fortitude, and passion for what she loves in academics, and in life.
