This was an exciting and unique role working in the G20 Finance Track and engaging with global, Australian and regional leaders in government, business and NGOs. The G20 is the premier global forum for international economic cooperation: Its membership comprises 19 countries & the European Union. Australia is the 2014 President and host and, as the Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said, "Australia has used its G20 presidency to strengthen the G20 itself."The G20 Leaders Summit took place in Brisbane next weekend. Prime Minister Abbott described the Summit as "the most important gathering Australia has ever hosted." The G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors met in Sydney in February, Washington DC in April and October, Cairns in September and at the Brisbane Summit Victor also worked on the G20 Trade Ministers meeting in Sydney, the G20 SME Conference in Melbourne and had the honour of working with the various formal and informal engagement groups including the B20, Y20, L20, C20, T20, i20s, the Girls Summit and the YEA G20 Summit,Significant achievements included the 2% additional growth target, the Global Infrastructure Initiative, the Global Infrastructure Hub and the BEPSs tax reforms.As Victor has said, "I have enjoyed every hour of this work. My honorary work here was to interview a wide spectrum of key players, analysts and observers in the Hong Kong governmental and political system to guide the next edition of the NDI reports on the "Progress of Democratisation in Hong Kong."

In this role, I served as the state's representative across North and South America. I was based in San Francisco with offices in Chicago, Washington DC and New York. My main role was promoting Victoria as a destination for foreign direct investment. This involved presenting to the leaders of many of America's largest corporations. My team and I also promoted Victoria's exports in defence and aerospace, education services, automotive, food and beverages including wine and beer.I led trade missions into Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Argentina and Chile in areas as diverse as education services, urban design and planning and sports services leading to the Brazil Olympics and World Cup.I took on the role at the height of the global recession. Despite the US recession and the high Australian dollar, we supported more exporters, with increased exports and assisted in winning foreign direct investment in aerospace, automotive, IT, biotechnology, retail, games & food.Premier of Victoria, Ted Baillieu, wrote: "Your hard work and enthusiasm in representing Victoria, as well as successful leadership of the team across the Victorian Government Business Offices in San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Washington DC has been greatly valued by the Coalition Government. During your time as Commissioner, you and your team achieved significant outcomes for Victoria by providing valuable assistance to American companies keen to do business in this state... The Transport Accident Commission is a personal injury insurer covering transport accidents directly caused by the driving of a car, motorcycle, bus, train or tram. The TAC is unique among personal injury insurers as one of its key roles is to promote road safety. Working closely with Victoria Police and Vic Roads, the TAC has developed world's best advertising campaigns that have changed behaviour and reduced the incidence of road trauma - I sat on the marketing and road-safety Board sub-committee. I also sat on the governance committee for the rollout of a new FINEOS claims management system crucial to the operations of the Commission and even more important as the TAC Headquarters was moving from Melbourne to the regional city of Geelong. The project was delivered on-time and on-budget.

I was pleased to be able to assist on the advisory Board of the Institute of Legal Studies at Australian Catholic University which conducts research in international law, comparative constitutional law, international and national human rights law, public law, public accountability, and law and education.

The Federal Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, the Hon. Mal Brough, invited the Centre to undertake a study on Tertiary Education in Philanthropy and Social Investment to ensure Australian tertiary education provides skills necessary to make informed and effective decisions in the field of philanthropy. The working group Identified the tertiiary education and training to encourage and enable informed and effective social investment; Identify means to promote, support and undertake research into how giving in Australia can be increased and more effective; Audit the range of options in Australian universities to address these matters; Identify the education and training gaps and recommend ways that these might best be filled; Find the best way of ensuring such education and training is delivered into the future.

The forum was run by a group of Australians including Australian Chinese and Chinese living in Australia. The mission was to support those Chinese seeking a democratic state in the People’s Republic of China. We supported Australia’s closer ties with China. The Foreign Ediitor at the Australian Newspaper described the Forum as "organised by three unusually brave politicians: Victor Perton, a former Liberal member of the Victorian parliament; former Liberal senator Tsiben Tschen; and the federal Labor whip and member for Melbourne Ports Michael Danby, by far the most courageous politician in any mainstream party when it comes to Chinese human rights. On the OECD rankings, Victoria does very well with its education standards but needs to do better in science and technology. Solving the problems of truancy in lower-performing schools was an area in which there was vigorous debate.
