I was lucky enough to be able to join the local fire station in Stromness in 2010 and it's one of those strange priviledges to be allowed to do. Two years ago I achieved my LGV blue light training and am now one of the appliance drivers. I respond to an on-call pager call out for the Fire Brigade within Orkney, (out with my own work commitments), attending weekly fire training at my local station.

I got back into daily telecoms work when I joined BJRE in the summer of 2016 working in existing and new networks both here in Orkney and further afield linking Wind Turbine communications. Like phone masts it presented some challenging environments and problems.

Working with my colleagues as well as developers, I’m involved in small project management tasks as requested, operational tasks of a technical nature and provide repairs, maintenance and installations of marine or land based equipment within EMEC involving waverider buoys, A.D.C.P.s, met stations, networking, fibre optic and radio communications at our wave and tidal sub-stations, keeping the SCADA monitoring system operational.I am also part of the duty manager rota covering the 24 hour call for sub-station alarms and site access via our permit to work system.

I joined T.S. at an exciting time participating in a 24hour on-call rota for microwave radio faults throughout Northern England, Scotland, the Isles and Off-shore installations. Including PDH, SDH and point to multi-point microwave radio systems, for clients such as THUS, MLL, West Lothian Council and Airwave. Responding quickly, organising spare parts, logistics and personnel to site, making good a repair with pre-arranged parts delivery and a good stock of van-spares. We undertook some very unusual jobs in often challenging environments. Laterally I was heavily involved in training new employees both in the office and on-the-job at site, working closely with my Regional Supervisor and customers.

I was employed to run a team Installing and Commissioning SIAE microwave links in a new contract for Eves on Orange and '3' networks in the U.K. and Northern Ireland. I moved up to performing microwave radio hot-cutovers in 2004 and for a time was one of only two engineers from four install companies passed responsible by Orange to work un-supervised on their links within the Northern region. I enjoyed a great working relationship with the Orange operations department during the 3G Site upgrade programme where I had responsibility to remove and re-install microwave links back to working state - whatever radios we found on site – this was some of the busiest and looking back perhaps also some of the most enjoyable work I’ve done. On site there would be between 10 to 20 contractors including Electricians, Riggers, Labourers and Crane operatives - all looking towards the radio man if there was a question or problem. By default the radio man was first on site and usually last off site after the phone traffic was confirmed working by the switch staff. Laterally working on ‘Siemens’ roll-out link installs in the North for Vodafone.

Employed as rigger working in a new field of work with new opportunities, at sites around Scotland on the One-2-One (T-Mobile) microwave link roll-out programme. Working up to Team Leader & Commissioner within the year gaining an IRATA rope access qualification along the way and also undertook detailed pre-install site surveys working closely with my line manager. We had a very close focus on quality of install at Tyco.

Employed initially as a driver, installer and warehouse staff, for bespoke racking and shelving installations. I moved into the office with a promotion to Project Manager / Contracts Controller and I successfully ran racking and shelving jobs from the salesmans order, through manufacturing, to the installers on-site fitting of materials.

Working in the family business, I kept our scaffolders supplied with materials and also our yard running smoothly taking on small installs when required. I handled the accounts and invoicing laterally, as well as customer quotes and estimates.
