I own the products and services portfolio for a profitable, growing cloud security company backed by Goldman Sachs and Bessemer. Oversight of engineering, product management, product marketing, professional services and corporate strategy.Acquired by BAE Systems in December, 2014.

Responsible for all of McAfee Avert R+D which includes the company's core Anti Virus / Spyware technology, as well as SiteAdvisor engineering and Ops. Also responsible for an ops team handling product security across the entire product line.Significant M+A activity, including work on business cases, diligence, competitive analysis, acquisition integration, and so on.Frequent customer contact in both product management / evangelist style roles. Frequent public speaker.

Performed many functions across the business, as needed (as is typical in a startup environment). Co-founded the company; Raised the Series A round (led by Charles River Ventures). Architected first versions of the company's static analysis technologies and did the initial product management work for the company's first product. Developed the CLASP application security process, and performed process consulting for customers. Responsible for the first $2M in sales as a services company.

Taught classes on software development to masters students.

My group focused on making Widevine's product offering more secure, from both a network and software level.

I brought in funding from DARPA to do an aspect-oriented extension to the C programming language. I also won funding from NIST for software watermarking. I also spent a lot of time doing software security consulting for companies like Visa. This is where I started writing my first book, Building Secure Software, with all around awesome guy, Gary McGraw.

As an undergraduate, I worked on the Alice Project (www.alice.org). As a graduate student, I worked on language design (www.viega.org/papers/thesisfin.htm). In my spare time, I wrote the Mailman mailing list manager (www.list.org).
