I've been working on my PhD in CS, focusing on using compiler-based optimisations and code-generation to automatically orchestrate the memory between host system and GPU devices. I define my programs using a high-level programming language called Single-Assignment C (SaC), which transforms into optimised CUDA code. I have developed several compiler-based optimisations and code transformations that allow me to take this higher language specification, and apply my sophisticated memory reuse techniques and device specific optimisations. My work shows competitive runtime performance when compared to many handwritten example codes.Through this work I have gained a lot of experience with C/C++/Fortran/Python based projects, typically with 100.000s of lines of code. Additionally I am proficient in the use of GNU/Linux and other *unix systems, and am proficient in the use and deployment of enterprise-grade hardware and systems. I have administered a HPC cluster for the duration of my PhD.

I worked on a project to optimise a legacy Fortran-based application, called the BGS Global Geomagnetic Model (BGGM). The computational system creates a yearly model of the earth's magnetic field, which is used by the oil&gas industry and others.This project was structured as a research internship, and used to conduct an investigation into the suitability of array programming and code-generation for optimising the BGGM application. I used the Single-Assignment C (SaC) compiler suite for this project, which through the array programming context can generate effective high performance multi-threaded code. After extensive profiling, a specific portion of the application was passed through SaC for optimising. An extensive evaluation of the work showed a performance speedup of over 10%. The work resulted in a publication in 2017 through ACM, see https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/2897336.2897348.
