From last 13 years working in logistics management of polypacked milk and bulk vended milk. Before this was in Projects which also needed skills of planning and execution. It has been an interesting journey so far in logistics . The first task we undertake was creation of schedule basis time and motion study of vehicle loading and scheduled deliveries to customers. Involved capacity balancing of routes, matching schedule times, keeping the costs low- all the constraints are of opposing nature. Technological intervention was the most obvious choice to bring in improvements in the processes. In last many years many small as well as significant intervention has been done. Some of them are like -improving insulation of vehicles for containing better temperatures during transit from plant to market. -Locking of all outlets of tankers for safe delivery of bulk vended milk. High Security Locks with single master keys were introduced for better controls. - installation of GPS in all vehicles. It is extensively used now as a tool for service monitoring as well as payment control mechanisms. The team tracks the fleet of 500 vehicles from one single control room getting dispatched from multiple and remote locations. - the indent collection was automated through mobile based app and web based integrated solution. Significantly improved productivity and reduced errors. In a typical day more than 30000 skus in terms of order is getting captured - the optimiser is in advance stage of induction in the system It shall help to overcome human limitations of creating complex but efficient routes to service more then 3000 points everyday. The introduction of technology do bring better productivity and capabilities of the system. But if change management is not handled well it is a non-starter. The systems inertia doesn’t allow changes to happen fast either due to inherent fear or lack of appropriate skills.
