I'm a computer science engineer from IIT Bombay. A 9-pointer and one of the highest salary getters in campus. I'm good in math, algorithms and programming. My academic interests include computer networking, databases and machine learning. I've worked in the intersection of technology and financial services (lending in particular) for over a decade, building amazing tech products that reduced fraud, NPA and increased employee efficiency. Our products are used by 25+ leading NBFCs and banks and transitively by over 100K users. In the companies I've worked and founded, along with my team, I've built amazingly scalable and impactful technological products that have lasted the test of time and are in production for more than a decade at scale.I'm now the founder CEO of FriendLoan Technologies, which is a financial technology company, which also has a NBFC license. After so many years, formal unsecured credit has hardly penetrated the top 15% of the population. The lending ecosystem is designed in a way to sharply discriminate against people with variance in their income flow. Even though they may have the same average income as a salaried person, the variance being higher practically kills their change of formal unsecured credit. The industry uses a one-size-fits-all formula of DPD-90 to label bad credit behaviour - irrespective of whether the borrower is a billionaire or a small business owner or a farmer. This just isn't right. The retail lenders incur huge penalty when DPD-90 happens - hence they do not even consider such potential customers. There are close to 90M good borrowers that have high enough average income, but the variance makes them un-lendable. The requirement in this segment? A cool 5-lakh-crore rupees a year!What if we have a financial product that can take such borrowers and build a reliable borrowing pool that confirms to the lending norms? At FriendLoan, we are building this revolutionary financial+technical product. With technology removing a ton of friction from this process, the scale is just setting in. We hope to reach 10M unique borrowers in this segment by Mar 2025 and in the process help India leap frog credit penetration in this totally under-served segment by several years.
