About Vikash Singh
I am currently a Principal at Stillmark, a Bitcoin focused VC fund where I invest in companies and do technical research (machine learning, protocol analysis, etc).I previously worked at (Google) X and Sandbox@Alphabet (spun out as Sandbox AQ) as an artificial intelligence (AI) researcher on a couple confidential moonshot projects in biotechnology and quantum computing. I also led AI/ML at Heal, a health-tech startup (acquired by Humana in 2022 after raising 200M+) I joined at the seed stage (employee <10) as a college student which was aimed at revolutionizing healthcare with doctor house calls, telemedicine, and remote patient monitoring (RPM). I received an Mphil in CS (distinction) from Cambridge where I conducted graduate research in the Artificial Intelligence Group. I received a bachelors degree in computational biology from UCLA where I studied as a Stamps Scholar (full academic merit scholarship) and graduated as departmental valedictorian. In college, I started Datareach, a startup (grant funded) dedicated to connecting medicine in developing nations with data science to drive improved patient outcomes. Worked with Cameroon Ministry of Health and WHO Office in Cameroon to research and implement smart surveillance platform using multivariate time series analysis and outbreak detection algorithms. I have also served as the Chief AI Officer of Arrow Dx, a biotech startup combatting liver disease diagnosis with nanotechnology and machine learning, and venture fellow at Stillmark.I have over a decade of research experience spanning machine learning (particularly geometric deep learning), computational biology, molecular biology, medical imaging, plasma physics/quantum computing, and Bitcoin/Lightning Network . When I returned I had the opportunity to work with the founders and C-suite on AI strategy, participating in the process of securing Series D financing in addition to hands on technical work and technical leadership (building AI team). • Spearheaded development and execution of Heal AI Roadmap, including deliverables related to routing and optimization updates, machine learning development and deployment across all Heal verticals (logistics, insurance, predictive health), and AI IP portfolio development (invention disclosures submitted and a filed patent). It was through this opportunity I had the chance to meet Nick Desai (founder/CEO at Heal), when Heal was a seed stage company working out of a coworking space in Santa Monica and pitch initial ideas for ML at Heal, eventually leading to joining the company and growing with it till the Series D stage. I also got introduced to Bitcoin here through meeting various startups in blockchain space (Netki, Gem, etc) as well as Bitcoin Core developers. Artificial Intelligence In Medicine (Aim) ResearcherCedars-Sinai Jul 2014 - Sep 2018Los Angeles, Ca, Us• Worked with Dr. Piotr Slomka, research scientist at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and Professor at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, on artificial intelligence applications in nuclear cardiology. It was here I caught the deep learning bug when I was 18, after a UCLA PhD student showed me a demo of a convolutional neural network (CNN) predicting someone's chances of getting a heart attack based on nuclear imaging data and discussed the potentially life saving preventative measures. This inspired me to start Datareach and join Heal in my undergraduate years to dive deeper into AI + healthcare. • Deep transfer learning ensemble methods to predict obstructive disease in patients who had myocardial perfusion SPECT performed on them. Developed ensemble of VGG 16 neural networks using Theano (worked for two years in the pre Tensorflow days!) and eventually Keras and tuned them to predict obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). •Stability analysis of evaluation of metrics for evaluating machine learning models in medical imaging. Performed experiments/statistical analyses comparing independent AUC curves, demonstrating the impact of seed variation on measured AUC in different validation mechanisms (split vs. 10x CV vs. Rep. 10x CV, and raising caution for medical professionals around the world using ML techniques to use the proper validation, resulting in first author paper in Nature Scientific Reports. Wrote scripts performing the simulations of the validation methods in Python as well the ROC visualization and wrote R scripts to further analyze the probabilistic output to generate confidence intervals. -
Breast Cancer Student ResearcherUcla/Charles Drew University Dec 2011 - Sep 2014Los Angeles, Ca, UsConducted wet lab molecular biology research for 3 years as a high school student under the mentorship of Dr. Meher Parveen in the field of breast cancer on a project that successfully identified mitochondrial targets of the Arginase enzyme using a proteomics approach (published PloS ONE Nov. 2013). The second project included verifying the anti-cancer effects of Vernonia Amygdalina (VA), a tropical African herb and investigating the mechanism by which it causes cell death. With VA as a main focus, we created and tested new breast cancer treatment compounds, focusing on combinations of VA with chemotherapeutic drugs such as Taxol and Vincristine. In vivo VA pretreatment experiments on mice reveal that VA pretreatment leads to a decline in tumor size, exhibiting VA as a potential option for therapeutic use. (published Anticancer Research July 2016) -
