In this role I managed Neonatal Services across Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty - 2 Level 2 Neonatal Units in Tauranga and Whakatāne, managing 40 staff across the service. My responsibilities included recruitment, supervision, education, payroll, rostering, creating a supportive learning culture, initiating service development and much more.Achievements in this role include:Obtaining Executive Board approval to update the unit names from ‘Special Care Baby Unit’ to Wāhanga Piripoho / Neonatal Unit, in collaboration with the Paediatric medical team. This was to provide a literal translation for Te Reo Māori speakers to ‘Newborn Unit’, and more accurately reflect the varied levels of care given to neonates across the service.Re-establishing a Neonatal Clinical Governance group to review systems, processes, policy and evidence, leading to service development with the aim of improved outcomes for pēpi and their whānau.

Soon after the declaration of a global pandemic I was contracted by the Ministry of Health NZ as a Close Contact Caller, working to deliver calls to close contacts giving vital information on how to safely self-isolate in order to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

I learned a great deal in this time, developed my teaching skills and continued to attend weekly professional development sessions focusing on language analysis.

I gained knowledge in risk management, health and safety issues and supervision of staff. I was responsible for maintaining a supportive learning culture and for overseeing the implementation of innovative changes in order to develop practice on the unit.
