Northside Center is a nonprofit that provides expert behavioral/mental health, education, and enrichment programs to under-resourced children, families, and communities. Each year, we help 4,000 New York City children and families rise up and thrive by offering the support needed to overcome adversity. Our goal is to instill, and in many cases, rebuild self-esteem in the children we serve.Founded by pioneering psychologists Drs. Kenneth B. and Mamie Clark nearly 80 years ago, their work showed how racial inequality negatively affected the self-esteem of young children which in turn changed the course of American history. The Clarks’ groundbreaking research, including the black-white doll studies, were critical to the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, which legally ended the segregation of public schools. Their findings were the first-ever social science research to be submitted as hard evidence in the Court’s history. Our Founders believed in tapping into the inherent strengths of children and families to help them overcome obstacles. This philosophy continues to be the bedrock of our work today.

Expanded nationwide from a New York company, through the strategic acquisition of a downstream stock company shell. Grew assets $200 million and rebuilt reserves after a 10 year decline. • Start-up of operations, customer service and sales infrastructure. Annual sales growth of 8 percent through 2007 and customer satisfaction above 97% year over year. Strategized and implemented e-commerce technology platform offering state-of-the-art educational and customer service features, including e-signature, bilingual website and women’s microsite.• Restructured $1.3 billion investment portfolio for a 40 basis point improvement in fewer than 12 months, with improved duration and interest rate risk. Increased assets and strengthened reserves to reposition the portfolio to withstand the current economic downturn. Paid yearly dividends and reset them to sustainable levels.• Achieved yearly operating profits while reinvesting in the business and readjusting to new interest rate conditions. Actively pursued sources of capital and strategic partners. Collaborated with Board of Directors in 2010 to cease new sales due to lack of access to capital required for continued expansion.
