The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) is a company of the Republic of Austria, owned by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Health and Consumer Protection and the Austrian Federal Ministry for Sustainability and Tourism. AGES was founded on 1st June, 2002.AGES supports the management of the federal ministries and the two federal agencies subordinated to it in questions relating to public health, animal health, food safety, medical and drug safety, food security and consumer protection along the food chain by providing professional and independent scientific expertise (as stated in Article 8 of the Austrian Health and Food Safety Act).Since 06.11.2006 the AGES Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene/Centre for Foodborne Infectious Diseases in Graz has been entrusted with the tasks of a National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for Antibiotic Resistance.The NRL is an accredited testing laboratory according to EN ISO/IEC 17025. The analyses are performed routinely and according to international standards. The National Laboratory for Health, Environment and Food is the central, largest Slovenian public health laboratory, dealing with hygienic and health ecological activities, environmental protection, microbiological professional health and research activities and chemical analyzes of various types of samples. The laboratory provides services for the needs of the state, especially for the needs of monitoring and official and inspection controls within the competence of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food and the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning. This covers primary processing of samples, evidentation, RNA/DNA isolation (using cobas 4800 (Roche) and the NeuMoDx 96 Molecular system and InviGenious (STRATEC Molecular) device) and storage of samples.I was also working with samples that indicate bacterial infections of resiratory, urinary, genital and digestive tract, through cultivation of bodily fluids (blood, urine, aspirates, BALs, feces) and swaps of human body parts (controlling MRSAs, CRs and VRAs) at different medias that promotes their growth getting them to the isolation stage.Furthermore we tested antibiotics suscetibility via antibiograms and E-tests (if needed, additional tests like colistin dilution or carba blue were conducted).Final microbial identification was determined via MALDI-TOF, sometimes previously with variety of biochemical tests (indole metabolism, haemolysis) and different microscopy staining techniques.

Institute of Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana (IMI FM UL) is the principal and the largest institution in Slovenia, highly qualified for microbiology and immunology activities in healthcare, research and education.
