Vikrom Mathur has over 20 years of international experience on issues related to development, sustainability and resilience across cities in multiple global contexts. He currently lives and works in Panjim, Goa. His ongoing work on Future Cities uses systemic foresight, through futuring exercises with experts and local communities to understand transformations in India’s growing mid-sized cities, and examine policies to ensure that these are just, resilient and sustainable. He undertook an assessment of how climate change-related impacts are likely to shape the lives of vulnerable communities living informal settlements in the cities of Delhi, Agra and Panjim. In August 2019, Vikrom organized a Monsoon Academy for urban planners and practitioners looking at frameworks for building resilience and governance needs for climate-proofing future cities.Vikrom brings an interdisciplinary perspective to the complex challenges of urban sustainability. He received his Doctorate of Philosophy degree from Oxford University, Institute for Science, Society and Innovation. The focus of his research was on institutional frameworks for climate adaptation decision making. He holds a Bachelors degree in Chemical and Environmental Engineering from McGill University, Canada, and a Masters degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden.Between 1997 and 2012, Vikrom worked with Scandinavia’s leading global think-tank, the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) for over 15 years. He has extensive experience in designing and facilitating government to government cooperation and in ‘localizing’ Scandinavian and global best practice and experience around sustainability and cities in developing countries in Asia and Africa. Vikrom regularly leads teams with different disciplinary backgrounds and across national contexts. He has undertaken consultancy assignments for various multilateral and bilateral development agencies including: Asian Development Bank; African Development Bank; Mekong River Commission; United Nations Environment Program; United Nations Development Program; Swedish Red Cross; and the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency. Vikrom is Founding Director of Tandem Research, Associate Fellow of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), Sweden; Senior Fellow of the Observer Research Foundation, India; and Senior Associate of Global Climate Adaptation Partnership (GCAP), UK.
