Marel has been going through a digitalization period for it´s products. I was hired to be one of the first people onboard to start working on an MVP to demonstrate how we could gather data from the machines Marel has and create value from the data.I have been in the data platform team since close to the start of the project. I was involved with most of the architecture design and drawing up diagrams, flow charts and similar documents to describe the design before it was worked on and implementing the actual solutions.One of the first assignments I worked on was designing a cold-path architecture. The first task for our cold-path was creating an IoT Edge Docker Module that would take care of uploading messages from machines on-premise to an Azure Blob Storage. We created a collection of a IoT Edge modules that would ingest messages locally and upload them. If the IoT Edge runtime had it´s network connection disrupted we could buffer up messages and upload them when the network connection was back up. We also created an API that took care of receiving messages from all of the on-premise setups and place them appropriately in our cloud storage, it was designed with minimal configurations needed on-premise and handle extreme volume with minimal cost. Next up was designing the hot-path architecture, focused on minimal latency for messages up the cloud. We designed an event based system that enriched messages and ingested them into Azure Data Explorer. Another important part I took care of implementing was multi-tenancy for hot-path data storage where we wanted to store each tenants data within a separate database. We also had to create an API to service the data based on the tenant requesting the data.My team was responsible for setting up a shared Azure Databricks instance with multiple other resources used to enable creation and running of models and store their results.
