GROFIE system combines traditional and high-tech solutions of home-horticulture. We take advantage of the contemporary trend of healthy eating. In the GROFIE system plants grow in soil, likewise in traditional agriculture, but on 365 days/year. Our system has already proved its relevancy as we have 110 clients who use already the half-automated version of the GROFIE system. Now we aim to fully automate our technology. As mass food production extended the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, preservatives and food additives, healthy food trends started to bring back natural growing technologies and food processing methods. Civilisation illnesses raised awareness to unhealthy foods, and people started to turn to organic products. Moreover, in several large cities the need for home-grown food is crucial. Many of the health-conscious consumers started to grow vegetables and herbs at home, in their garden, terrace or even in their flats. Urban dwellers – those who do not have space to grow their own organic food only in their flat. However, several of them are unsuccessful in growing vegetables and plants at home as they do not come from a rural environment - do not have the knowledge or experience -, or their flat is not appropriate - too small or too dark - for growing plants. The GROFIE system represents a new paradigm in home food production. It is an urban clean-hand gardening system, the first service based, pre-grown, indoor food production system with completely compostable gardening units and cloud-based automation of lighting and irrigation. Our technology is based on a replaceable, modular, reusable and/or compostable plant container formed as plant capsule (horizontal use) or plant pocket (vertical use).
