• Discovered a new role for Retinoblastoma protein in dental stem cell survival and differentiation by analyzing gene expression with in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, and RT-PCR in tissues, organ cultures, and primary cells.• Performed ENU-mutagenesis screen and identified 30 novel zebrafish mutants with cartilage and bone defects as models for Mendelian disorders. Mapped the mutations by Next-Generation Sequencing. Analyzed molecular and phenotypic changes by in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, apoptosis assay (TUNEL), enzymatic staining (TRAP, Alkaline Phosphatase), RT-PCR, cartilage and bone specific staining.• Collaborated on several projects with labs from Tufts, UMass, UOregon, and Northeastern.• Supervised and trained lab assistants, undergraduate and graduate students, summer interns for scientific experiments.

• Cloned tethered dimers and proved that homo- and heterodimers of transcription factor Twist1 have distinct biological functions in vitro and in vivo. Based on the data a US patent was granted to Dr. Spicer. Commonly used techniques included in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR, Western blot, ELISA, EMSA.• Generated and characterized inducible Twist1 transgenic mouse lines. Managed mouse colony.• Determined Twist1 interactions with other signaling pathways (BMP, Wnt, FGF, Shh) in vitro and in vivo, by utilizing in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR, luciferase assays, reporter mouse lines.• Unraveled distinct functions of Twist1 homo- and heterodimer in tumorigenesis/cancer and metastasis in cell culture and mouse models for breast cancer.• Established collaboration with Dr. Drissi lab (UCon) to characterized role of Twist1 in cartilage development.
