The Sedona Group was established in the mid-1990’s to provide financial and strategic management services to entrepreneurs and their companies. Over time I became a coach and trusted advisors as well as a part-time executive in their businesses. As an independent advisor I relied on the success of my clients for my own survival. If my clients didn’t generate cash flow for payroll and growth, then I wouldn’t have gotten paid. Walking in your client’s shoes provides a critical perspective.Some of the engagements undertaken over this time include:• Mentoring of early stage game development company. Assisted them in development of their business model, helped them prepare for a pitch competition where they were co-winners, worked with company and investors to line up angel funding, and assist with ongoing advice as the company rolled out its strategy.• Working with digital marketing/analytics company on the development of an organization structure and processes to support future growth. Also worked with them on a financial model to support funding alternatives.• Performed a work flow analysis and designed an application to automate the workflow. Enabled senior management to hand off daily operating activities and focus on growth areas for business.• I developed an extensive financial model for a start up to assist in financing the launch of a cigarette replacement product. The model helped the founders determine that their initial approach was costly and possibly not financeable. They have revised their production process as a result and are now using the model to raise funds of approximately $50 to 100-million for the project.• I was the CFO for a publicly traded company developing a refinery to convert waste oil to diesel. The company has been taken over by a private entity that is working to complete the project.

As an Associate with Part-Time CFO Services I worked with clients to provide financial and strategic expertise. I also assisted the founder with marketing the Company through seminars and presentations to the business community. Engagements included:• Assisting a shareholder of a business through a split with his partner. I worked with the legal team while also providing CFO support for the business through a difficult transition.• I was the interim CFO services for an electrical contractor performing work in three nuclear plants. The company was wrapping up its contracts with OPG and was moving its operations to the Bruce Peninsula. The CFO role was heavily involved in advising the CEO on project and operating matters as they transitioned from contracting out trades people to taking on projects of their own. There was a need to build up their project management and costing capabilities to effectively manage these projects.• I advised the owner of a film production company on the viability of setting up a film studio in the Niagara Region. Prepared financial projections and a business plan to assist management in the decision. I also prepared financial models for alternative strategies.• I worked with two entrepreneurs on their options for setting up a machining company. As part of the process I prepared financial projections and a business plan to secure financing. Coached the founders through the first few months of operations as processes and systems were set up.

Created by the Durham Strategic Energy Alliance, Spark Centre is one of fourteen not-for-profit Regional Innovation Centres (RICs) that form part of the Ontario Network of Excellence (ONE). Spark Centre helps start and grow innovative technology-based companies in Durham Region and Northumberland County. During the period of time I was with Spark Centre I worked with a number of early stage companies to provide process to their business building efforts including assessment of need, metrics to track progress, business model design and assessment of product/market fit. I also worked with the Spark Centre team to develop a set of training modules, organize an annual conference and work with participants in the Ignite Pitch Competition.
