I’ve always felt it was an honor to tell someone else’s story. I remain passionate about this privilege, even after 30 years in the industry. Here's what I believe are my greatest attributes as a journalist:Strong communications foundation: When I decided to become a journalist, I wanted the best education possible. So I attended the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University and studied under the tutelage of such notable professors as Justice Hill, Guido Stempel, Michael Bugeja and Marilyn Greenwald. This was in the mid-1980s when journalism schools were producing some of the best reporters in the business. AP Style became second nature, and deadlines were air-tight and absolute. I have carried this with me my entire career.“Old-school” ethics: While the goals of news organizations are to be accurate, neutral and fair, it is also a goal to be first. Too often now, the latter is perceived as more important than the former. The digital age likely has caused this with the ease of accessing information. We must be armed with both the drive and ethics of the past as well as the urgency and accuracy required of the present. Versatility: As my writing samples and career experiences demonstrate, I have worked in various capacities in my 30-year journalism career. I am proud of the skills I have developed while working as a general assignment reporter, features editor, page designer, columnist, editor-in-chief and journalism instructor. In my current capacity, I serve as both sports editor and the evening editor for St. George News, a fully digital newspaper that covers a five-county area in Southern Utah. In recent years, I’ve also augmented my skill set by freelancing as an AI tasker and reviewer and digital content creator, and I have become SEO proficient. I also write catchy headlines and leads and periodically conduct staff training on these and other topics.Passion for the craft: Everything begins with the “printed” word, and writing, editing and disseminating news are simply what I love to do. It doesn’t matter what the topic is; my passion for well-written, grammatically correct, AP Style-savvy, accurate information and its distribution remains firmly intact. I remain steadfast in my desire to produce informative, accurate and newsworthy stories, whether I am the one editing, writing, posting to a website or social media platform or appearing in a video. I’ve always been honored to do so.
