Research Assiciate/Fellow - Arizona Research Institute For Solar EnergyThe University Of Arizona Dec 2008 - Nov 2012Tucson, Arizona, UsI headed a team of 6 undergraduate and graduate students in a project aimed at mitigating the effect of variability of solar power generation on grid stability. This project included measuring and forecasting this variability as well as building and modeling a smart grid that uses demand response and energy storage to accommodate intermittent generation.Using our database of PV solar power generation measurements I built a statistical model of solar irradiance variability. This model was key in designing a smart grid at Biosphere 2, a micro-grid research site near Tucson, AZ, with its own power plant, ground water pumps, and solar power station. I worked to implement a smart grid that uses dynamic control of the water infrastructure as well as a small amount of energy storage to compensate for the variable generation of a solar PV plant. I built a computer model of the water and power infrastructure and used this model to determine how much PV power could be installed at Biosphere 2. I also determined that dynamic load control could reduce the amount of energy storage needed by a factor of 20. -

I showed for the first time that measurements of atom-surface (Van der Waals) interactions can be used to test atomic theory calculations. My work resulted in several peer-reviews publications.
