About Vincent Rella

I am a science teacher with three certifications in the areas of biology and chemistry, grades 5 to 12, as well as possessing a general science certification for grades 7-12. I possess seven years of full-time teaching experience across five grade levels and six courses. My philosophy of teaching science is that it is fundamentally about two things—knowing what you are talking about (being a knowledge expert) and communicating what you know in an understandable and engaging way. This is what I strive to do in the classroom, and without wishing to appear immodest, it is also what I am best at. I work tirelessly in the classroom to be an exemplary teacher—one that truly earns the respect of students, parents, colleagues, and administrators. My dedication and professionalism challenge me to continually perfect lessons and each and every year I rework mine in an effort to do just that. I have no complaints about the Core Curriculum, teaching students who take a little longer to ‘catch on,’ having a course load that spans the wide variety of courses I have facility in teaching, and being evaluated, in part, on how my students perform on tests. Easygoing and yet ready for all the challenges, simply put, when it comes to teaching, I am ‘all in.’

Further utilized technology for administrative purposes—Renweb for my classroom roster and Moodle to post assignments, instructional material, review sheets, and announcements. •Planned and delivered memorable classroom demonstrations. This includes “kitchen chemistry” and other showy displays to present concepts in visual and exciting ways. •Developed differentiated lessons to incorporate challenging concepts for honors students as well as support for students who have more difficulty (those with IEPs and 504 plans). •As the only chemistry teacher in the building, ordered reagents/supplies and optimally organized the stockroom.•Provided extra help three or four times daily (before, during, and after school). Incorporated demonstrations, discussions, game-like challenges, and hands-on activities, such as graphing and microscope and lab equipment use. Infused fresh material into lessons, which I identified through my own professional research. •Leveraged the best aspects of project-based learning by having students locate supplemental information about a topic, conduct hypothesis-based research, and apply that research in a project. (Ask me about when we studied buoyancy and density and tested the principles with miniature hot air balloons!)•Fostered cooperative learning, jigsaw fashion, coalescing and reforming groups of students to research and share information. •Served as a helpful colleague, conducting a Professional Development Seminar on Classroom Management and coaching my peers on how to best incorporate technology into lessons. •Discussed students’ progress with parents/guardians during parent-teacher conferences.
