BioAware was established in July 2000 as a spin-off of the Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (CBS-KNAW, an institute of the Royal Academy of Sciences in The Netherlands) but was registered in Belgium under the form of a limited company. Dr. Vincent Robert is one of the two co-founders of the company that started on a small pace and has grown gradually. The current team is composed of several senior developers and researchers. They are based in Belgium, The Netherlands and in Tunisia. BioAware contributed to a number of international research, databasing or website projects such as MycoBank (www.mycobank.org), Q-Bank (www.q-bank.eu) or MIRRI. BioAware collaborates with major institutions like Institut Pasteur (Paris, France), Unilever (Vlaardingen, The Netherlands) or Plant and Food Research (New Zealand), for example. The company created a number of software but the main one is called BioloMICS. It is a very large tool allowing specialized and scientific biological databases to be created to fit the specific needs of researchers working on any organisms (from viruses, bacteria, fungi, plants, insects to animals) by a broad base of users such as taxonomists, ecologists, human, animal or plant pathologists, molecular biologists, pharmacists, industrial researchers, etc. They can all use the system in completely different ways and with different goals in mind. One can create own custom databases without any prior knowledge of either databasing or programming. The system is completely dynamic and can evolve with the needs of the users. A number of tools for data retrieval and analysis are also included in the system. The system also allows linking with many other databases. BioloMICS is proposed as a suite of tools capable of archiving, analyzing and publishing data on local computers and Internet servers.
